Happy New Year!

"No one should bite the other"

Many years ago I became interested in symbols used in various cultures to convey social messages. I learned about Adinkra symbols that were used for brass weights and also as stamps for fabric prints in West Africa. When Mfundishi Jhuty Mes Hassan K. Salim had a bookstore and shop in Plainfield, he had some brass pendants of these symbols among his many resources. They always seemed to me to be good reminders of rules for living. One very popular symbol, Sankofa, meant "learn from the past" and another, representing peace and harmony, meant "bite not one another."

I think the latter is a good thought for 2015, as there has been an increase in disharmony that needs to be dispelled.

Look at these Adinkra symbols - maybe there is one that resonates with you as a symbol of your wishes for Plainfield in 2015.

  3. I clicked on the link. Neat article. Always interesting to see old school screen printing techniques which are still being used today in art pieces.
