Williams Wins Despite RDO Diss

Incumbent Councilwoman Rebecca Williams overcame the disregard of Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Green to win re-election for four years representing Wards 2 &3 at-large. Williams, a progressive Democrat who is president of the New Democrats political club, won the June primary and therefore the Regular Democratic Organization party line for the general election. Though professing support for all Democrats on Column A, Green published campaign material that omitted Williams. He treated Linden mayoral candidate Derek Armstead similarly, but Armstead also won, despite the disrespect.

In unofficial results Tuesday, Plainfield City Clerk Abubakar Jalloh counted 3,743 votes for Williams to 562 for Republican challenger William Michelson. (All official results will be released by Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi on Monday.)

In other council election results, Democrat Diane Toliver won unopposed in the First Ward with 1,446 votes. In the Third Ward, incumbent Democratic appointee Gloria Taylor won the balance of an unexpired term to Dec. 31, 2016, overcoming a challenge from Republican Randy Bullock. Taylor had 1,827 votes to Bullock's 237.

The turnout was light, considering that the First Ward had 5,261 eligible voters. The Third Ward had 6,120 registered voters and the Second Ward had 6,552.

The winners will be sworn in on Jan. 1, 2015.

  3. What's with all the blue shirts handed out to select city employees and elected officials? With spending priorities like this, it is no wonder that nearly 2/3s of Plainfield's registered voters stayed away from the polls yesterday.

  5. Thanks Bernice, I hope that during this next election year, people who are full of hate and contention find it in their hearts to celebrate Plainfield in all ways and join together so that Plainfield can smile and stand up tall again with pride!

    1. Not likely.

My hope is that people will stop complaining and vote Jerry Green out in June of 2015. Actually, why don't we all start now with a campaign to not vote for Jerry? Maybe we can get out his vicious tactics so people will start asking questions. Whaddya think?

  6. Bernice, Looking at the numbers how many Plainfielders showed up at the polls an voted for Obama? Where are these registered voters when the School Board and City Council? Citizens say that they are tired of their high taxes and lack of services, but they have not come out to support their local candidates. Did they come out to vote for Obama only because he was black, and not because they wanted a change for a better run country? If citizens want the right to vote, and their voice to be heard, then they should come out on EVERY election day and not just when a black man is running for President.

    1. Any presidential election will draw more voters than a mid-term, according to the political analysts.

  7. It was a beautiful day yesterday. No reason to stay home and not come out to vote. Where was all the people who complain about not liking Green and his followers yesterday? At the shore? Only 20% of registered voters came out to vote? So sad to hear. I guess some of us who care to vote are now going to pay the price for those of you who when to the shore or sat at home on your ass.

  8. The people who complain are the people who vote. The people who do not vote are the people who are disenfranchised. Presidential elections get better turn out because it's shoved down our throats through television, radio, and internet. Local elections never have as much press and you often have to look for it yourself.

People who vote are the same people who read these blogs. Why do we read them? We sought them out. We are hungry for knowledge, and not everyone has the same hunger. Most people (especially in Plainfield) are trying to get by day by day and hardly ever put any thought into who is running the city. This is also why incompetent people win. Those who are not completely aware of what council/city hall does may still vote for the people they know.

Family votes for family of friends they saw at the bbq with their cousin's husband's aunt who ran the church bake sale last Sunday ...and these people are familiar. I know him/her. Let me vote for him/her. I have no idea how competent he/she is, but I know him/her. See him/her all the time. That's who should win.

How do we get the community at large more engaged in the process and more aware? And I'm sorry, but the television is not realistic, reliable, or relevant.
