Why No Crime Story?

Someone has asked why Plaintalker did not cover the shootout at the cookout.

First of all, neither Plainfield Plaintalker nor Plaintalker II ever purported to be a full-service news outlet. And when it comes to a crime story, anecdotal reports are not considered to be official news. Only the jurisdiction involved can release official statements, in this case being the Union County Park Police, who did release a statement today. There was a brief item in the Star-Ledger online and a longer story in the Courier News tonight.

Some readers may recall that this writer gave up driving a couple of years ago. My reports on doings of municipal government are accomplished by walking to City Hall or Municipal Court. The new blog and the old blog also include other coverage, but solely at my ability or inclination to do so.

So take the blog for what it is. There has been breaking news on the blog, which other bloggers and the print media have followed. But not every story needs to be chased by all the bloggers, especially the ones that require cooperation from official sources that don't recognize blogs as news outlets.

With all that said, it is extremely important that the issue of gang violence is met with a joint effort of city, county and even state law enforcement to ensure the safety of law-abiding citizens going about their daily activities. The First Unitarian Society of Plainfield is holding a forum Thursday on the causes and possible solutions to youth violence, starting at 6:30 p.m. Five other churches and various community organizations will take part, along with city officials. The church is located at 724 Park Avenue and parking is available in city parking lot 7 across the street from the church.

  1. As I have said to people face to face a few times before when discussing your BLOG...not your NEWS BROADCAST, "It's her BLOG, she'll do what she wants."

  2. Please attend Project Hope at the First Unitarian Church. The forum will explore gang violence and solutions. Project Hope was the idea of Jody Wood, director of Angels in Action Foundation and brought to fruition by Carl Heath and members of the First Unitarian Church, and supported by various organizations and officials.

  3. This goes back to the Police NOT allowing Police Reports listed in the courier-news. Other towns show them on pages 2, 3 etc, why not Plainfield ??

  4. Per Anonymous at 10:36AM: Because there is no crime in Plainfield..simply ask the Mayor. She reduced murders by 300% so I am sure the rest of the crime withered away with it !! We are simply "imagining" crime. If all of us were less negative we could see the same Plainfield the Mayor and her lackey's see through those Rose Colored Toe The Party Line Glasses that Jerry Green handed out to them.

  5. Although other commitments will keep me from this Forum it typically reflects the Unitarian's commitment to their community. I would hope that there will be adequate exposure on long term solutions, some I have already suggested, as well as immediate.

I hope Bernice will provide us with a long report even forgetting that she is a reporter and inject personal opinions.

  6. To Anonymous 10:36 am and Rob @ 10:41 am: the practice of releasing Plainfield police reports to the Courier was stopped in the early years of the previous city administration.

  7. FYI, the Courier News stopped having reporters check police blotters some time ago. So wht you see in the paper is just what police departments choose to send to the Courier. Formerly, a reporter did a "police run" every day, visiting various police stations to review reports. Whether this practice coincided with an administrative decision not to release police reports, I can't say.

  8. And to Anonymous at 2:52....the previous administration never claimed to reduce ANYTHING by 300%....

  9. To Rob, She did clain she reduced crime by 300%. It was in one of her campaign mailers. However, while it sounds weird, it actually can be mathmatically justified, it is just a bit awkward.

  10. uhhh...Yes... I know SHE claimed that..hence my comment that the previous administration DIDN'T claim that. And if you have 1 murder and reduce it by 300% you have less than zero murders. There is fuzzy math, there is new math, there is old math and then there is "HOT MESS MATH".
