Signifying for 2016?

Some of the unprecedented 70-plus comments on Tuesday's blog post made me think they had as much to do with elections in 2016 as they did with the topic at hand.

The council seats up next year are the Third Ward and the Citywide at-large seats, currently held by Gloria Taylor and Tracey Brown, respectively. It has become somewhat typical that candidates start trying to impress the public and mess with possible competitors many months ahead of the filing date in late March or early April and the primary election in June.

So look out for comments that sound like campaign sound bites. We haven't even finished with 2015 yet!

Speaking of which, after the big flurry of activity in June and on the July 27 filing date for school board candidates, I totally forgot who is running this year and had to look it up.

Here's the lineup:

Second Ward: Democratic Primary winner Cory Storch vs. Independent John Campbell (the younger)
First & Fourth Ward at-large: Democratic Primary winner Barry Goode vs. Independent Norman E. Ortega

School Board (three seats): John Campbell (the elder), Jackie Coley, Richard Wyatt, Emily Morgan

Reminder: The Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Library tonight and will resume the hearing on Sleepy Hollow Developers' application for 212 residential units on South Avenue.

  1. Thank you Miss Bernice, I was wondering why the sudden attacks on Rev. Brown by some unknown and known haters. Rev. Brown is not ghetto, just because she has a heart for the least of them does not make her ghetto.Have one conversation with her and that is not what you walk away with.Olddoc has quoted that she has proven to be a pleasant surprise, others have stated that she thinks for herself. Yes, it is election time therefore those with personal agendas and motivated by Mapp will be on the attack, but at least get the facts straight. She stated that she is in favor of the apartment project and is looking forward to it getting off the ground.Just because she takes time to think things through most of the time does the right thing.Ghetto she is not, a disappointment only to those who want another candidate like this Lalo person. Lula Moore

    1. Brown is a nice surprise - I just wish she would have the stomach to match her votes to her comments during meetings. She says one thing and then gets squishy at vote time.

    2. I see that Lalo has left an indelible impression on you, Ms. Lula Moore.

I've only stated facts -- no speculation, no name-calling, no hate -- just facts. You can't undo facts and you can't undo truth.

Lighten up Lula, you'd probably like me if you met me.

  2. Hi Bernice,

Don't forget to remind people that the Democratic City Committee decides who runs on the regular Democratic slate and June's primary showed most of Jerry's people losing big time and 48 out of 68 seats were taken by the Plainfield Democratic Organization. I am on the Committee and don't see us voting to have the incumbents run again. Tracy Brown has a chance, since she has shown some moral fiber in working for Plainfield, but I don't know about the others.

    1. From what I hear, Brown is looking to run for Mayor against Mapp.

    2. I doubt that rumor is true - Rev Brown doesn't seem to be enjoying her council position let alone thinking about being Mayor.

    3. I do believe Rev. Brown has morals and some of the things Jerry and others want her to do on the Council go against her beliefs. She is a good person at heart. She also has a church that is divided about her being in politics, as I know several members of her church. I hope she makes the right decision for herself and her church.
