Voter Mis-Education?

The windows of a Park Avenue storefront are completely filled with these signs, which on a quick glance appear to be for Republicans. I thought maybe the Booker campaign had moved out and the Republicans had moved in. Passing by on foot, I took a closer look. Under the large-print names, it says, "VOTE NO."

OK, so the signs are against the Republicans. So let's break it down a little further. The only time voters can vote "no" is when there is a question on the ballot requiring a "yes" or "no" response. The line for candidates just requires selecting the candidates you want.

Heaven forfend that some unsuspecting Democratic voter should think that by pushing a button next to the names of Campbell or Lonegan, they are voting "no."

Furthermore, this sign conflates two different election dates. The contest between Democrat Cory Booker and Republican Steve Lonegan to fill the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg's Senate seat is on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The Assembly race is on the November 5 general election ballot, along with numerous other contests for governor, state Senate, county freeholders, Plainfield mayor and more.

Why single out the Assembly race? Could it be because Assemblyman Jerry Green, who is also chairman of the Plainfield Democratic City Committee and the Union County Democratic Committee, is running for re-election to the Assembly? Green is also a proponent of the theory that one can vote "no" for a candidate, as noted in this blog post.
The Union County Democratic Committee paid for the signs. Why not start with the top of the ticket and tell people to "vote no" for Christie, if that's the way he thinks it works?

Most people are driving by this storefront and they may only recall the large-print names of the Republicans. The small-print "VOTE NO" message, however misguided, may not even register with the thousands of people passing by in cars. Oh well, as some Republican supposedly once said, "A bad strategery is better than no strategery at all."

  3. Clever signs aimed at simpletons. This year Lonegan is playing the role of the devil. Campbell by association is a fallen angel flying uncomfortably close to our local god. NO to both! Amen.

  4. LOL -- pathetic, as usual from those who are running the puppet show around these parts.

I'm not sure why majority of voting folks in Plainfield don't realize that every other community around us has continually flourished, progressed and developed while Plainfield has declined consistently for decades under the same recycled puppet masters.

Around here going "Green" has been horrible for our environment. Let's try Campbell, afterall it is, "mmm mmm good"!

  5. Reminds me of the time in the 70's when the City wanted its firefighters to become public safety officers. After a successful petition against the proposed ordinance, the City worded the referendum question in a confusing manner such that a "no" vote meant the proposed ordinance would be upheld (obfuscation at its best). Opponents of the PSO ordinance had to vote "yes." Firefighters rallied, demonstrated, and passed out flyers saying "Yes means No and No means Yes - vote YES." The ordinance was soundly defeated by a preponderance of "yes" votes.

  6. This is typical Jerry Green, he’s so smart. I seen the red signs covering all the window space in the store front on Park Ave and what it says to me is Jerry Green is scared and desperate.

Not to bash Jerry Green, but you have to admit his time has come and a vote for him is just more of the same. Jerry had at least 22 years to improve and make a positive impact on Plainfield, let the record speak for itself. I said this before and I will say it again, just look at what Plainfield has become in the last 22 years, all on Jerry Greens watch. The BIGGEST failure on his watch was to allow the closing of Muhlenberg hospital and we should never forget or forgive him for his part in this. Just think about the jobs and services that he took from us. And to top it off now he has the Muhlenberg team going around to see if they can get support from the community for a 600 unit apartment complex in the middle of our low density neighborhood. I truly believe Jerry will do and say anything to get re-elected so he can be in position to make sure Muhlenberg get their way. Muhlenberg is still pitching this venture and now they are trying to gain buy in from some of Plainfield’s Clergy. Just last week there was a meeting (not publicized ) at Revered Kirkwood’s church on west 7th where Muhlenberg present their vision for a 600 unit apartment complex on the site of the now closed Muhlenberg hospital. Rev,. Kirkwood is in favor of this development and from what I understand he doesn’t even live in Plainfield and his church is currently in foreclosure. This just does not pass the small test.

Again I say, we may not be able to blame everything on Jerry Green but he is the only politician that has been in office ruling over Plainfield for the last 22 years. You do the math.

I agree with Keeping it Real, why not try Campbell. Do we want real change or are we too scared for real change? Does it really matter Republican or Democrat? For once people can we do our due diligence and vote for the best candidate for the job and not the party line because that’s what we’ve been told to do? Being a black women and a register democrat, I hear so many of my friends, neighbors, relatives and even stranger say Republican don’t care about people of color. Here is a young man that represents a real change, someone that is young, educated, energetic, a innovated thinker and motivate to improve Plainfield and the people’s perception of a Republican. He represents ALL people! Why not give him a chance?
