Rev. Gloria Taylor, a retired educator and widow of Mayor Richard L. Taylor, won council approval Monday to replace Mayor-Elect Adrian Mapp in the Third Ward council seat.
Mapp, who takes office as mayor on Jan. 1, resigned from the council Friday.
Taylor was one of three nominees chosen by the Democratic City Committee to be offered for council approval to fill the vacancy until the Nov. 4 general election. The others were former Third Ward Councilman Don Davis and teacher and former school board member Roni Taylor.
All three were interviewed Monday by the council in closed session. In the public meeting, Councilwoman Rebecca Williams nominated Roni Taylor to fill the vacancy, but the motion failed, 4-2, with Williams and Cory Storch voting "yes" and Rev. Tracey Brown, Vera Greaves, William Reid and City Council President Bridget Rivers voting "no."
Next, Vera Greaves first said she nominated Roni Taylor, but quickly changed it to Gloria Taylor.
The vote was 5-1 for Gloria Taylor, with only Williams voting "no."
There was then no need to vote on Davis.
Gloria Taylor stayed after the meeting was adjourned to be sworn in by City Clerk Abubakar Jalloh. She will assume the seat at the Jan. 6 reorganization meeting, to be held at 6 p.m. in Plainfield High School.

Congratulations Mrs. Gloria Taylor -those Jerry Green puppet strings look mighty fitting on you!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. Our system works !!! A orderly transfer of power reflects a just and civilized society. This surely is a great nation to see this happen over and over again. God has Blessed America.
ReplyDeleteWill I agree with everything she says or does ? Probably not but I really mean it, Congratulations our system works!!
DeleteBetween the votes to fill Adrian Mapp's unexpired term on the City Council and those also for the African-Caribbean Commission and the Community Emergency Response Team, the only three agenda items last night, it is apparent the balkanization of this city continues unabated. Where a full court press is needed to move the city forward, we're more like the Knicks and Nets, with lackadaisical play yielding losing results and further fragmentation. Despite just over 17 hours left in the life of the atrocious Robinson-Briggs administration, it is hard to imagine we are not already heading down the toilet. I hope I'm wrong, but it sure looks again like politics trumps Plainfield most every day of the week.
ReplyDeleteTo 2:06am - It's not America that needs blessings, it is Plainfield - and that ain't happening.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Jerry Green on another term as Mayor of Plainfield!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to all those changes including more tax and spend (especially on all those well-deserved social services); additional mattresses on Front Street (sure to be snapped up by all the yuppies moving downtown – they’re all looking forward to an awesome line-up of summer “cultural festivals” put on by some of your most ardent financial supporters); more “complimentary” food and snacks at every turn (that ensures voter turn-out); increased referencing of “seniors” and “our beloved youth” at every public speech (that demonstrates you truly care and that you’re in touch with the community); and the addition of, yet, another clergy to the slew of activists on our "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" City Council -- Sure to pray for the salvation of us all, or at least mine -- because if you don’t agree with them, then “you just don’t care” or "you can move somewhere else".
Congratulations to all who managed to keep their publicly funded jobs or perhaps are about to land a new one because you did such a good job at supporting the local machine. Really, job well done! You can stop the puckering now . . . . . .maybe.
Love our local 'progressive' Democrats.
Jerry Green hasn't kept the mayor's office, but he's done a good job with the City Council and now let's see if the Council wants to keep Robinson-Briggs failed eight years going or if Sharon's shady four will work for the people of Plainfield and not themselves.
DeleteI understand why Rebecca Williams nominated and voted for Roni Taylor - this is the Candidate she wanted to serve on the Council to fill the empty seat in the third ward.
ReplyDeleteBut after loosing the vote for Roni why would she not vote for Gloria Taylor. Is she not running on the regular Democratic line herself this spring for reelection?
Will she and Roni Taylor run on the New Dem line against the party line?
All the makings of an exciting spring in Plainfield politics.
To Jim Spear: There were 3 possible appointees, not 2. My choice was Roni Taylor--the strongest choice of the three, in my opinion. No one tells me who to vote for--what does my vote in this instance have to do with the RDO? If you have further questions, feel free to ask them of me directly--clearly, Bernice wouldn't know the answers to your questions.
DeleteBest,
Rebecca
Councilwoman Williams -if there was a "LIKE" here I would definitely click it.

Rebecca Williams. A whole lot of bark but no bite. The radical who goes on blogs and argues with often anonymous commenters. I'm sure there are more productive things to do.
Delete@Jim Spear -I don't know why she did not vote for Mrs. Taylor, but just perhaps, maybe Councilwoman Williams was saving her vote for Mr. Don Davis.
ReplyDeleteConnie B.
To Jim Spear, My question isn't why Rebecca voted for Roni, but why Cory voted for Gloria.
ReplyDeleteRoni Taylor was the worst of the lot. A New Democrat rubber stamp who was a disaster on the school board. Cheers to the Council for picking the most capable candidate available.
