Three Years Later, Fire-Damaged Hulk Remains

It has been three years since a fire ravaged this building on North Avenue. It was under consideration for demolition, but the owner said he planned to repair it. After the fire on Dec. 17, 2011, the block was closed for a month, with police and fire personnel on watch.

In May 2012, the city placed a lien on the property for $66,385.29 to cover the cost of the round-the-clock public safety watch.

From the front, the boarded-up building looks solid, but the image above shows the rear view. No action has been taken to repair or demolish it. The building is located in the North Avenue Commercial Historic District, near the main train station.

What will it take to resolve this situation?

    1. Westfield has a 9-0 republican council (aka one party system) yet they have no crumbling commercial buildings that I know of. Perhaps the causes of asset erosion are more longstanding, complex and difficult to solve than you are able to understand or willing to admit? Or perhaps it is specifically a democratic one-party rule that you object to? Or maybe it's only the people that dominate the local democratic party? In any event one-party rule ain't the whole puzzle; at best it's one of many pieces. Please try harder in your analyses. Thank you.

    2. I can see interpretation is not your strong point..
your inability to take the next step and see that it is in fact the fault of a Party First Democratic Group in Plainfield that is in fact the cause of these situations and many others that are simply swept under the rug and that being my point makes your commentary irrelevant .. You can't blame the Democrats without even the leaders of the "for shame Jerry & Co" crew such as commentator "Bob" circling the wagons and defending the status quo... The other building on North Avenue that collapsed over the course of many years right in view of ANYONE taking the train but no one in city inspections is still most baffling.. well..baffling to those with common sense..not the least bit baffling to anyone in city inspections and safety..they have a litany of excuses and I'm sure they've already got a set for this building as well..

  2. just because you, I and any other citizen in Plainfield can see it doesn't mean anyone related to inspections or safety can see it... Them's some might fine blinders they got on !

  3. If that building collapse is the city at fault for not doing something, hey Mapp send John Stewart to check it out. Oh I forgot he's busy .

    1. You may remember that the building collapsed during a previous administration.

And yes, they are busy. Look around you to see what's happening in Plainfield instead of being snide. Do you subscribe to the administration's newsletter that tells you about what is going on in Plainfield? Perhaps you should - you will see that they are busy.

If you want to subscribe, send an email to the mayor's office - or call if you don't have email.

  5. If I remember correctly, the same person that is building the apartments on 2nd and gavet owns this building. It will likely be a later phase of construction.
