Progressive Dems Win Committee Seats, Council Lines

Unofficial primary results show Mayor Adrian O. Mapp's Progressive Democrats capturing 48 of 68 City Committee seats as well as winning the line for both City Council seats.
Mapp's candidates ran as "Union County Progressive Democratic Organization" against party chairman Jerry's Green's Regular Democratic Organization of Union County slate.

"We kept the high road," Mapp said of the hard-fought campaign. "We delivered a message that was embraced by the people of the city."

Incumbent Councilman Cory Storch will be on the Nov. 3 ballot seeking re-election for a fourth term, having bested Green's candidate Charles Eke in the Second Ward, 803 to 272. In the contest for the First & Fourth Ward at-large line, PDO candidate Barry Goode garnered 532 votes to 500 for RDO choice Steven Hockaday.
Mapp reminded the committee winners that they need to show up Monday, when the City Committee elects a chairman for the next two years. As the current chairman of the Regular Democratic Organization, Green must inform the committee winners of the time and location of Monday's reorganization. Mapp also urged the committee winners to attend the Union County Committee meeting Tuesday, where Green is also the current chairman.
Storch called the sweep "a referendum on (Mapp's) mayoralty."

"What did the people say? We are doing a good job. The people want progress," he said.

Obviously elated at winning on his first run for elected office, Goode said he had told Mapp he would "go in and go in hard" on the campaign trail.

"I'm just overjoyed," he said Tuesday.

Mapp called the voters' endorsement of his local slate " a repudiation of what has been happening at the City Council in the last several months."

Green had backed Mapp for mayor in 2013 over incumbent Sharon Robinson-Briggs, but no sooner did Mapp take office on Jan. 1, 2014 than Green made up with Robinson-Briggs and condemned Mapp. Of the seven council members, a majority followed suit and frequently blocked Mapp's initiatives, with Robinson-Briggs egging them on in public comment at council meetings

All results Tuesday were considered unofficial. Official primary results, including provisional and absentee ballots, must be certified by Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi Monday.

  1. it's nice to see a chance at change .... what would be even nicer is to not have the New Dems roll over and play nice when Green states, " I don't know where all this negativity came from, all I've wanted is for one strong unified party to help Plainfield hold off the evil Republicans, we can still work together " and have the New Dems wring their hands.... moan... cry... and say, "Jerry is sorry, we should give him and his cronies another chance" .. It'll be tough as that's what they do best never really getting the ball across the line..but it's at least hopeful they'll actually do it and rid this city of the Green Team on City Council as well as in Plainfield as a whole... Please don't screw this up New Dems..we voted for you, now do it.

And as he likes to say you have to be able to count to 4 on the city council he still has the puppets on a leash and that wont change until next year when the city wide atlarge and the 3rd ward seat are up next june

  3. We won. It was a huge victory. Let's call it what is was, it was a LANDSLIDE!

But that was the easy part - the real work is ahead of us. We can't blame Jerry Green anymore for what's wrong in Plainfield as we own it.

    1. Jim, don’t forget there are 7 voters on the council, the Mapp administration only has 3 of those 7 votes. The other 4 are still controlled by Green. Let’s plan for next year by putting someone on the council from the 3rd ward that really cares about the people of Plainfield and moving it forward in a positive direction!

Congratulations to all the candidates on the Mapp team! We did it, we are making progress. Although I just ran for a committee seat, I am so grateful and overjoyed that my neighbors came out big time to vote for me and Charles. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    2. Bernice, I meant to say in my post that "we (now) own" what's WRONG in Plainfield as victors . . . not that we own Plainfield.

Just in case that wasn't clear.

  5. Plainfield-TAK To Bernice Post Primary 6.3.15

Congratulations to Mayor Mapp, Cory Storch, Barry Goode, and all the Union County Progressive Democratic Organization City Committee candidates on a great victory! It was well deserved and holds great promise for a better future for Plainfield.

Having said that, let’s all remember it’s only the first step and the long war with Jerry Green for control of Plainfield is far from over. We’ve see this happen before in 2003 when Al McWilliams and the New Dems won control of the Democratic City Committee only to lose it back in 2005 when Jerry stole column A in the primary. We know Jerry fights dirty; he has plenty of jobs and influence to dole out, and has plenty of political favors to call in from all over the state to get his way, like he did in 2005 when he got contributions for Sharon’s primary campaign from democratic bosses as far away as Cherry Hill. And remember some very powerful political players from Trenton installed Jerry here to run Plainfield politics and direct millions of our tax dollars to their politically connected cronies. And those special interests don’t want the Plainfield gravy train turned off.

There are several key steps in this war in the weeks and years ahead. The first step will hopefully be next Monday when the Democratic City Committee votes for a new chairperson. It looks promising now, but you can bet Jerry will wheeling and dealing jobs and favors to buy votes. The next step will be next Tuesday when the Union County Democratic Committee elects a chairperson. Even if Jerry loses as Democratic City Committee Chair, he can still be re-elected as Union County Democratic Chair. The big hope is that whoever wins the Union County Democratic Chair, won’t let Jerry steal Column A in the next two primaries like Charlotte DeFillipo did in 2005.

Jerry will still control City Council until January 1, 2017 at the earliest assuming both Gloria Taylor and Tracey Brown are defeated in the June 2016 primary, which is not a given.

Jerry’s reign of terror won’t be officially over until the after the June 2017 Democratic primary assuming he does not regain control of the Democratic City Committee and steal the Mayoral election again.

So let’s celebrate a great victory today, but let’s commit ourselves to keep fighting until the war is truly won. You know Jerry will be.

  6. I want to thank the people of Plainfield for voting for change and not for the Green obstructive council members. We will move forward and I wish to that those people who voted for me in Ward 2, District 1. I love Plainfield and am so proud to be a Progressive Democrat working for my home town. Thanks again.

  7. Congrats to all the progressive winners! And a word of advice: Don't get complacent. Ten years ago Al McWilliams managed to wrest control of the City Committed from Green, but it didn't last. Be vigilant. Continue your campaign each day.

  10. Bernice you are wrong, the council have given Mapp most of his initiatives, and the council is not egged on by Sharon. To all the Peter's, Jeanett's, Rob's, Bob's,Tom's, Dick's, and Jim's, you people need to stop. Jerry has puppets but so does Mapp, they are storch, Williams, and now Goode, they will vote exactly the way Mapp tells them to, everybody knows that.Mapp has three puppets and cannot count to four.He is power hungry just like every other politician.I put my money on Gerry he will be back.

    1. Anonymous 4:05 p.m. You are wrong and that can be easily seen on the TV broadcasts. Many voters I spoke to voted for Column C because they saw what was happening at the Council and were appalled at River's unprofessional behavior and the outright lies spoken by Sharon and Jerry's kids on the city council. I'm glad people were paying attention so Jerry's kids need to pay attention. People are watching you and judging you.

    2. Jerry gives away jobs the people of this county pay for just to keep his power and get his way. Let's not let that happen and keep up the fight and finally be rid of the trash that has made plagued Plainfield for too many years.

    3. uhhh.. His name is spelled Jerry, not Gerry...but I guess the support of some knee jerk party hack who can't spell is better than no supporters at all.... I'm just sayin

    4. But maybe 4:05pm, the council will vote for what is best for Plainfield, and not a self serving political agenda.

Are you bothered at all by the fact that the council members who were appointed by Jerry voted to reinstate the strip club on 3rd and Richmond, against the wishes of the neighbors and police?

Do you think that is in the best interest of Plainfield? Ask Rivers, Greaves, Taylor, and Toliver why the voted for a strip club to be reinstated even though the neighborhood said that after the club closed the area has been quiet and safe. Ask them, and let us know.

  11. Congratulations to all of the Column C victories.

You must continue to be vigilant! A couple of Jerry's puppets who lost in the Board of Education elections are now planning on running as Independents for Council seats in November. I am sure the goal is to grab the Latino votes away from Progressive Democrats.

I am curious what Jerry has promised the Latino leaders in this city.

So are these numbers legit? Also like I said earlier come Tuesday night a lot of people who's smiling now. Will be frowning then, Mr. X

  15. Bernice question who decides what wards get the # of districts it gets? Ward 2 has 11 districts therefore the potential for 22 committee seats going one way that's almost a third of all seats total.

    ReplyDelete
  16. My understanding is that it depends on voter turnout over the years. There used to be 84 voting districts, now there are only 68. Kind of a "use it or lose it" proposition. Wards and districts are redrawn, I believe, after each census. Anybody with more knowledge, please explain.
