School Board to Hire Williamson, Brown

Former Plainfield Corporation Counsel Dan Williamson, who has also served as executive director of the Plainfield Municipal Utilities Authority, will be continuing to serve in his most recent role as Human Relations consultant to the Plainfield school district pending approval at Tuesday's school board business meeting.

Williamson will be paid $78.80 per hour to oversee the Human Resources Department for the period from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2016, not to exceed $70,000. He received the same hourly rate for service in the same role from Sept. 21 through Dec. 31.

Williamson was only the second executive director of the PMUA since its inception in 1995. He served three years before his contract expired in June 2015. A new majority on the PMUA board of commissioners declined to renew it.

Another item on Tuesday's agenda is a resolution to hire Tracey Brown as "Boys Varsity Assistant Basketball Coach." It does not specify whether this is Rev. Tracey Brown, the incumbent Citywide at-large councilwoman who is seeking re-election, but Rev. Brown was inducted into the Montclair State Hall of Fame in 2008 for women's basketball, so she is certainly qualified to coach. The stipend is $4,285.

The school board meeting is 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Plainfield High School auditorium. See the complete Feb. 16 business meeting agenda here.

  1. Bernice, this is not a new contract. This is an amended contract to change the date it ends. There has been no break in time. As you said, the first one was from September to Dec. 31, 2015. This one was originally from January 1, 2016 to December 31,2016. They are changing the end date to June 30, 2016. My question is if the contract is shorter, why is it for the same amount. The same thing is true for Winthrop McGriff's contract. You should note that Dan Williamson was also hired in September as a special compensation lawyer for $150.00/hr with NO end date and NO cap. Under BOTH titles, in the Month of January alone, he was paid $12,799.00! It will be interesting to see what happens in June, as the BOE is NOT advertising for a Director of HR. Will he get another contract?

    1. By extending the contracts incrementally the full financial impact is obscured. That seems obvious.

  2. Is Mr. Williamson's compensation a consulting fee,i.e., is he working as an independent Contractor, or is he working as an employee? If it is a salary will the Board be obligated to pay employer side benefits for social security, health, and retirement benefits in that it is a 6 month contract? Did anyone fill this position previously, or is a newly created position? If the job existed previously what was the previous office holder paid? If the job does carry the full benefit package the total cost annualizes to approximately $200,000, close to what Mr. Williamson was receiving as Director of the PMUA. Do any readers know these answers? Bill Kruse

    1. Mr. Williamson was hired as a consultant, to my knowledge he is not getting benefits, but with our BOE, you never know. With 2 consultant positions, he may very well make $200,000 or more. The position of Director of Human Resources has always been a full time employee of the BOE. I do not know the previous Director's salary or the reason that person left. As I said, I do not understand why they are not advertising for such a critical position, or why they are ending his contract in June. The summer months are traditionally the busy time for hiring teachers and staff to prepare for the new school year in September. I also question the qualifications of Mr. Williamson's as a lawyer to head the HR department.

  3. Why is an assistant coach hire for $4285 at the end of the basketball season? Is the BOE playing fast and loose this hiring an consultant of HR instead of hire a certified candidate? Are we going back to the Gallon years?

  5. To Anon, 4:07pm

It is my understanding, that Brown has been in that position for 2 months. She was hired
    as an emergency hire.

    1. We get it Lee, Rev Brown walks on water. I agree that she’s qualified for the position and I’m sure you can agree, she isn’t the only one. I believe she was chosen as a quid pro quo.

  9. Anon, 2;55PM, why do you people always have to get so nasty and sarcastic. I was merely stating the fact that she is qualified based not on her two Hall Of Fame Awards, but her coaching experience. The word is they asked her, why would or what would she want in return? You are probably so use to people doing things for favors that you don't recognize when people do things because they may really enjoy it, and no she does not walk on water, maybe that is in your mind.
