Rec Issues Resurface

Acting City Administrator David Kochel is the latest official to be drawn into the fray between volunteer- and city-sponsored baseball leagues. He promised Monday to sit down this week with Karen Glencamp-Daniel, who in public comment at the City Council meeting detailed more troubles with use of municipal ball fields by the Queen City Baseball League.

Clashes between the volunteer group and Recreation Division Supervisor Dave Wynn have been an ongoing saga at council meetings for more than a year. Glencamp-Campbell said the group missed a chance to have a tournament on Memorial Day and will now miss a similar opportunity on Labor Day.

Kochel only came to the city on May 11 for a 90-day stint, which was just extended for another 90 days through amendment of an ordinance on acting terms. It is unlikely that he had any input on the Memorial Day issue, but Glencamp-Campbell asserted she received an email from Kochel two weeks late to have the Labor Day event.

"You took one side and made your answer," she told Kochel.

She raised another sore point, a fish fry fundraiser just for the city league that took place at a municipal ball field.

Kochel said he would meet with her on Thursday.

Council President Annie McWilliams said she was "sorry to hear" the disputes were ongoing and said she wanted to resolve the issues once and for all "so the children don't feel we are against them."

  1. Why this just isn't possible...the Mayor said last year she was putting an end to all of...remember, she was looking out for all kids.
So...she either has no control over her employees or she has given Dave Wynn permission to behave in this manor...way to pick 'em Plainfield! Leadership at it's finest.

  2. I want to understand why Dave Wynn hasn't been fired and what about him makes him keep collecting a pay check? I also wonder why we haven't recalled out loser of a mayor, but so are the mysteries of the City of Plainfield. I hope something can be done so our kids aren't impacted so negatively.

Wynn sucked the Mayor in by saying he does alot for the youth back when she was first elected. It is clear today neither one of them care about our youth it just sounds good to say. If either one of them gave/care a little about our youth QCBL would not be going through all of this trials and tribulations for our youth. We(QCBL) can't touch all the kids but the ones that we are in contact with, we are going to work with; going into a 2nd year battle with the city and all the aggravations, I am proud to say that we have not lost focus which are our community youth. Why don't we just once try to do it right! There is a measurement that can be thrown into the equation, to see just what recreation is doing but your mayor doesn't want to hear/know the truth. I continue to thank my coaches, team parents, and the QCBL Family for their support, tireless efforts and trustworthiness to allow us to continue to work with their kids through baseball and other attributes that will help make them became a better citizen, in the future to come. Maybe some folks don’t like my tone at times, but it really doesn’t matter. I am here for the kids!! And at the end of the day if they want baseball QCBL is going to give them baseball.
    PLAY BALL!!!

  4. Question: Does the city league have to ask the permission of QCBL to have a fundraiser at the municipal field, during the city leagues designated shared time of it's own field? Or should the proceeds be shared with QCBL? It is obvious as well as a sad reality that council undertakes causes contrary to the administration, but you have been drinking from the well on this issue long enough with your eyes closed, you folks must open your eyes and see the cloudy and fact tainted issues in the water. The baseball issue started in October 2010 on the ONLY basis that QCBL wanted to stop the city baseball league from forming. An agenda that was not based on the best interest of all of the children of Plainfield but on QCBL's desire to be the only baseball league in Plainfield. I challenge councils members to review the tapes, this is fact based. The problem with "Rec" has not been going on for 2 years but only began with the fear of competition, which I might add, is not competition because QCBL refuses to allow their children to play in a game with the Rec league teams, are their true interest that of the children? Instead they welcome any and every league outside on the City to play their teams on the city owned field. Regardless of whether you are for or against the current adminstration, that is wrong. Someone please open your eyes!!!

  5. My eyes have been open wide and I've seen both sides from the start of all this mayhem. QCBL hasn't been treated fairly. There are a lot of issues going on here, but for the life of me if we are going to post comments for crying out loud post your name.

It's obvious you have been drinking some kind of "kool-aid" yourself. For a moment let's assume you are right, that QCBL didn't want a competing league in the city. Well, it's kind of a moot point now, because the league is here and there's nothing they can do about it. As for some of the other points, the last time I checked, this was still a free society and people have a right to decide who they play with. Just because the Rec is insisting that it happens does not mean it's some kind of right and they have to go along with it. If other towns want to play with QCBL because they have built and forged relationships with other towns as a fair, fun and quality team with great kids and coaching, why can't Rec go out and build their own relationships with other teams so they too can have other teams to play besides trying to badger QCBL into playing them. What an asinine statement about QCBL wanting part of Rec's fundraising money. They seem to be doing fine at raising their own money and not asking the city for a dime. Maybe that's why they have been purposely locked out of the concession stand on a few occassions so they couldn't raise funds to support their league because Rec didn't want them to continue to be self sufficient. As far as I know, QCBL hasn't ever locked Rec out of the stand, removed the bases, banners or equipment, turned off the lights during the kids games, etc., this honor belongs to Rec and Rec alone. While I guess it is Rec's perogative if they want to hold fundraisers at the field, but why wouldn't they do that in conjunction with their games, oh yea, that's right, they don't have any more games, yet they are still holding onto the field, so QCBL won't have access to it clear and simple. They could have had a Memorial Day Tournament and Labor Day Tournament, but Rec refused to release the field, even though they are not and have not had a game at that field for the past few months. Sounds like it is Rec with competition issues, not QCBL. The one thing I will agree with you on is that people will come to their own conclusion when they have all the facts.

Once again clouded version of SOME of the facts, but I see you are responded to what you have been told. If by my asking some questions means that I have drank "kook-aid" then maybe you too should enjoy a ciool refreshing drink too. I don't kniw that you would have the answers to the questions that were poised in my unitial postt, but as usual, legitimate inquires shirted. As far as the children playing each other, of course, no one should be forced to play another, but is it the children or the adults,. Isn't what this all SUPPOSE to be about, unfortunately I don't think it is. But hey let's keep the foolish battle continuing, it's not like Plainfield has any other serious issues to deal with.

  10. To so called "James" in response to your questions and remarks-
    1. It is not a matter of having to ask permission for the rec league to hold a fundraiser. It's a matter of using the field for what it was meant for - playing baseball.
    2. QCBL does not need your, oops, the rec league's funds.
    3. As far as rec forming their own league. It is a known fact that Plainfield is not foremost a baseball town. So it was really stupid to try to split the kids who wanted to play baseball rather than making one strong league. But since they decided to split the kids, then all rec had to do was not sabotage QCBL every chance they could for the last 2 years.
    4. Yes do check the tape. dave wynn's supervisor, Jennifer Wenson Mayer said at a Council meeting, ON TAPE, "there would be no rec league" after a direct question from the City Council. And that was because QCBL was already in existence.
    5. QCBL doesn't have to fear competition from rec. They have a well respected reputation with those who they play. Why would rec try to force QCBL to play with them unless they have no one else to play. Can't say the same about rec's reputation because of dave wynn.
    6. It is also a known fact that QCBL players will find better competition playing with other towns who have more focus on baseball.
    7. QCBL has been issued a permit to use the city owned field. The State of NJ says they can play anyone they want.

    Any more questions?
