If Plainfield Had Badges
Yesterday I ran across a very entertaining blog post about earning badges as one acquired the traits of a true resident of the Pacific Northwest. I have visited Seattle enough now to get the references. It made me wonder what badges one might earn while becoming a real Plainfielder.
Just offhand, I can think of the Texas Weiner badge, Raritan Valley Line badge and Shakespeare Garden badge. You might get one for the Outdoor Art Festival or the FOSH Garage Sale (either selling or buying).
How about a West End Reunion badge or one for House Restoration?
East Enders might get a Backyard Fig Tree badge (although I know of one fig tree on Lee Place). Walkers could earn a Hub Stine Track badge. It would be fun to get a Dairy Queen badge.
What iconic Plainfield things or activities can you think of that could generate a badge?

Plainfields badge would be a bottle of Liquor,a gun and a crack pipe
ReplyDeleteOMG, you almost formed a complete sentence.
DeleteI would suggest a Drake House Museum badge (when I worked there, we redesigned the buttons--I think the school children who visit still get one!), a Plainfield Library badge, and how about a badge for visiting every historic district in town?

The Plainfield Historic Preservation Commitee should create a banner or plaque for any homeowner who restores a historic property. I've seen plaques and lovely banners on homes in the Van Wyck Brooks historic district but believe the district bought them. Regardless the city should do something to honor homeowners who restore their homes (not to mention how much money they spend doing it) because the homes are what plainfield is known for and that will never change.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great suggestion. Recognition to homeowners who are saving NJ history for generations to come. Sharing with the public when the house was built, its different states through the years (ex. nursing home, multi family, etc.) back to it's former glory would encourage economic development/residential development via preservation. I know this was proposed to the HPC but not surprising it has not seen the light of day.
DeletePerhaps this should be done by the citizens of Plainfield. Sounds like a great opportunity for Plainfield.
How about a badge for any city employee who saves some of our tax dollars from being spent of wasteful things, I dont think we would need many badges though
ReplyDeleteMaybe a badge for each season you attend all the concerts of the Plainfield Symphony. It is New Jerseys oldest symphony and I believe 2nd oldest in the country.
ReplyDeleteA badge for documenting architectural styles and details in town buildings and house, a Plainfield Symphony Badge, Beautifying the city the way that Maria did, a kindness badge to people who reach out into the community and perform a kind act for people in need, organizing a community cultural event that draws people together from diverse backgrounds such as an art show that is like the one that was on Front Street many years ago.
ReplyDeleteA badge for those who survived the Aug 2, 1973 Storm/Flood in Green Brook Basin. Hard to believe but several people were killed, may they RIP.
