Campbell, Edwards Lead BOE

Wilma Campbell is president of the Plainfield Board of Education and Keisha Edwards is vice president for 2013, the first year of a new pattern for service.

School board elections moved from April to November in 2012. Candidates filed on June 5, the day of the primary election. November winners Edwards, an incumbent, and Jackie Coley took office immediately, as both were filling vacancies. Their new three-year terms and that of November winner Mahogany Hendricks began this month. Delois Dameron won a one-year unexpired term and will serve through 2013. Her term and those of Campbell and former president Renata Hendricks will expire on Dec. 31. Those wishing re-election and any challengers will have to file this year on June 4.

Routine news coverage of the school board is a thing of the past. The only story about new school leadership  last week was one on Perth Amboy, although numerous districts held January reorganizations. Tuesday's Plainfield meeting at 7 p.m. clashed with a 6 p.m. PMUA meeting and a 7:30 p.m. Charter Study Commission meeting. Those who want to follow the action at the Plainfield school board will have to consult the district web site and attend board meetings, although as Dan Damon pointed out the initial information on the reorganization meeting date was wrong on the web site.

Plaintalker regrets not being able to cover school board meetings in addition to City Council and other governmental meetings. Anyone willing to take on the assignment can get guidance from The Citizens Campaign on how to start.

  2. Bernice, Given your coverage of PMUA matters, what is your take in the news of bid rigging related to municipal tax liens in New Jersey. NJ Spotlight ran a story on it today. See it at:

FBI Probe Snares Another Firm for Rigging Tax-Lien Auctions
Thousands of NJ property owners were cheated as conspirators bought debt at 18% interest

This article made me think of all of the fighting for control of the PMUA and the lengths some will go to protect the status quo of the PMUA. Do you think that tax lien sales have anything to do with the PMUA's refusal to enter into the modern era of allowing residents view and pay their PMUA bills online? Who benefits from the difficulty related to paying PMUA bills? It's almost as if PMUA wants to encourage a certain amount of delinquency amongst its "customers". I wonder how much money certain tax lien bidders give in political contributions to those connected to The PMUA? Is anyone following the money in regards to the relationship between tax lien bidders and local politicians in Plainfield? Is there anything we residents can do about this?

  4. Ugh, the BOE -- another bunch of recycled no goods running the show, a cast of characters even the Big Apple Circus wouldn't hire!

Why is Wilma Campbell heading this organization, as I believe she sent all her kids to private schools, not Plainfield public schools. Moreover, considering that Plainfield's educational system has consistently sat at the bottom for well over a dozen years, doesn't anyone get the picture that something is wrong here!

It's time for new people and new blood all over Plainfield. Obviously, the leadership in Plainfield has failed its residents for well over 30 years now. One of the reasons home values in Plainfield suffer, is due to the pathetic public education system.

The blind lead the blind and money exchanges hands all the time in this city -- that's what keeps these pathetic so-called leaders in place. They're always claiming "it's all about the children" HYPOCRITES! These people have failed the children of Plainfield over and over again.

One can almost be certain that the hundreds of millions of dollars budgeted to the Plainfield Board Of Ed is not going toward the education of the city's children, rather into expensing trips, meals and the like for the clowns running the operation -- stealing from the children for their own benefit. It's sick, sad and very obvious when one you look at the rate of graduation and lack of success among Plainfield H.S. students in recent decades.

The Plainfield BOE is, yet, another entity in serious need of investigation by the NJ State Attorney General.

If you're not satisfied with what you see in your childrens' classroom, call and complain to the New Jersey Board of Education - 877-900-6960! REFORM THE SYSTEM NOW!
