Belin, Muhammad Seek Mayoralty

The field of mayoral candidates has doubled from two to four with the filing of two independent candidates.

Mustapha Muhammad and D. Scott Belin filed Tuesday and will be on the November ballot along with Democratic primary winner Adrian Mapp and Republican Sandy Spector.
Muhammad made his intentions known months ago on his Facebook page. He describes himself as a "student of the Honorable Louis Farrakhan." In 2000, he was joined by local community leaders in support of the Million Family March, a sequel to the historic Million Man March.

Belin has served for many years as chairman of the Zoning Board of Adjustment and was board chairman of the city's first charter high school, Barack Obama Green Charter High School, when it opened in 2010. See correction in comments. One of 11 children of the late Annie Mae Belin, he is the brother of Plainfield Schools Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles.

Mapp was endorsed by the Democratic Party in March and won the June 4 primary, defeating incumbent Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs. Spector has served for many years as chairman of the Republican city committee in Plainfield.

The general election is Nov. 5 and the mayoral winner will take office on Jan. 1, 2014 for a four-year term.

  2. Muhammed calls himself of the late Farrakhan he must have FAILED because one of the biggest teaching is the respect for our children and woman which we knows nothing about. He is just full of hot air. Where is his money coming from to run the city? because as a seasonal employee he makes out well. If Belin wants to help, why not start helping your sister run the Board of Education. Everyone today wants to run before they even crawl. It is time for change not a time for more nonsense! Plainfield has had it for 8 years! Both of you need to take a sit!! Relax and let a qualified candidate take Plainfield back to the way it was once upon a time.

  3. Wow! if it is true that D. Scott Belin is running, the mayor's race has just gotten interesting. He is more than qualifield and is a serious professional. I think the public is in for a very good race. Let's see if it's true. I would say check him out at running Zoning board meetings before you form an opininon. He handles the city's business - no nonesense. I hope this is true

  4. For those of you who want a identifiable improvement in our city administration the news that there are now 3 candidates to share the traditional Democrat vote provides encouragement.
Let's get behind Sandy Spector and transform what was initially viewed as a perfunctory effort into a meaningful campaign. Hey, you never know! Bill Kruse

  5. Scott Belin was not a board chairman of the Barak Obama Green Charter High School. He is also the son of the late Mr. Willie James Belin, Sr. and Annie Mae Belin. He comes from a solid Plainfield family. The Belin family awarded scholarships this past Wednesday to high school students in their honor. Bernice you may wish to check your information on this guy before publishing.

    2. Good Morning Bernice,
I have been asked to address this matter. After reading the article, you reference, I can understand the confusion. The way the article is written is the culprit. I have not served on the charter school's board. At the time of the school's application I was serving as the Zoning board chairperson, a role I am presently and proudly in today. I work for the good of the city of Plainfield with a very effective group of dedicated citizens. I look forward to seeing you at future meetings.

      Best regards,

      D. Scott Belin, PMP

  6. Mr. Belin is related to the Plainfield superintendent of schools, which causes me to wonder if he is fronting for the Campbells.
