Mapp Wins Big In Primary

Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs declared she was “on a mission from God” in seeking a third term, but voters who didn’t get the memo from on high gave Councilman Adrian Mapp a decisive 62 percent win in Tuesday’s Democratic Primary.

Unofficial results were 2,789 for Mapp and 1,746 for Robinson-Briggs.
Happiness reigned in Democratic Party headquarters on Front Street when the tallies came in. Members of Mapp’s New Democratic Club joined forces with the Regular Democratic Organization after he was given the party line in March.  Mapp thanked all, especially his family, who saw him through many political changes leading up to the primary victory. He said the trials and tribulations were “all for the purpose of getting here, to this point in time.”

“Plainfield is in need of change,” he said, promising to fulfill his campaign mantra of “One Plainfield, One Future.”

“I will be the mayor for all of Plainfield, those who supported me and those who didn’t,” Mapp said. My door is open to every citizen in every ward.”

Robinson-Briggs, who had the party’s backing in 2005 and 2009, had been campaigning for re-election since last fall in expectation of receiving the line again. Her rejection by Union County Democratic Chairman Charlotte DeFilippo just before the April 1 primary filing date left her scrambling for support.  Her local slate consisted of herself and three city committee candidates. A visit from Rev. Al Sharpton on May 24 was geared toward vindicating her  use of $20,000 for a 2010 town meeting to fight gangs and gun violence, but that and the May 22 launch of a Facebook page appeared to be too little, too late.

Her husband, Peter Briggs, came to speak to Mapp privately after the results came in, but the mayor remained in her Watchung Avenue headquarters.  Asked for a comment there, she said, “I have enjoyed serving the people of Plainfield and will enjoy doing so after Dec. 31, but in a different capacity.”

Assemblyman Jerry Green, D-22, who is also the Plainfield Democratic Party chairman, announced a slate of school board candidates for the November election, consisting of a ”black female, a Latino (sic), and a white male gay.” They were named as Deborah Clarke, Anabella Melgar and Richard Lear.

(Plaintalker did not get filings Tuesday from the Union County Clerk’s office for school board or for independents for mayor or Fourth Ward, but will get them as soon as possible.)

In November, Mapp will face Republican Sandy Spector and any independents who file, but a Democratic primary win in Plainfield is considered tantamount to success in the general election.

  3. Another mayoral no-show. Mr. Mapp will have a large pair of shoes to fill, basically unworn for years. Then there's the other pair of shoes on that other guy's feet that might require some toe-stomping. I guess we'll see how this waltz plays out. There is something very convoluted about all this, so it'll be easy to get tripped up. Here's hoping for a good show, because the show must go on.

  4. I congratulate Mapp on his very hard victory. This victory represents challenges and opportunities.

The blame game has to stop. The "buck stops her" mentality has to start.

Mapps success will be our success. But success will only come from doing differently then we have been doing for the past 30 years. Status quo thinking will result in status quo results.

Mapp will need the help and cooperation of all citizens. No one will dance if he does not play the song that people want to hear.

Mapp can be the one who turns the page for Plainfield. But that rests with him. Not others.

It will take the same level of commitment and perseverance he has shown in becoming Mayor. Now is not the time to take your foot off the accelerator. If he understands that the Mayor executes the will of the people and is not royalty (a departure from the current) then that is a good start.

We have all been here before. We have all wished for something new, only to see that everything is the same four years later. Can we do better? Of course we can.

Do we want to do what it takes and are we ready for bold actions? That question remains unanswered.

Congratulations Adrian. I wish you every success.

  5. Congrats to Mapp, but was the stretch limo really necessary? Let’s hope this is not an indication of things to come.

  6. Mapp, and Green together. Mapp bowed down to party bosses, sold his soul and now owes them.

That debt will have to be repaid with interest.

What difference do you expect Bernica Alan, Burney, Rob?

...... EXACTLY. You've obviously never read my posts.
I can give you a list of things from Christmas yet to come... including the excuses and hemming and hawing that will occur after.
      How ??
Talk to most anyone of them... They'll talk a big game.. A HUGE game face to face...but anywhere else.. it's the same " I'd like to respectfully disagree " and when Jerry snaps the leash.. They all come running.
They can deny that all they want...but they do it every time.
A true leader would grab the leash and twitch it back, really hard.

  7. Today I have learned that SRB sought a third term in office, because she was on a "mission from G-d". Dear me, this just gets worster, and worster! The lame duck mayor expects to continue to serve the people of Plainfield, after she leaves office? When did she ever serve the people as our mayor? The theater of the absurd, continues unabated....

    Sharon's next stop? The PMUA?????

  8. I think that after all Adrian and his family have been through, and for the long and exhausting day to victory, if his friends want to give him a ride home in style, let them. No taxpayers funds were used at least.

  9. To RB - At least the citizens of Plainfield will not be paying for it.

  10. Good Afternoon. The campaign road is a long and tough battle, the families are the ones that suffer throughout. Congratulations Adrian, Amelia and family WE truly wish you the best throughout, hold your head high.

Bernice, please understand that my venture to the Democratic Headquarters brought a message from us, so it was not Peter it was US. A visit is a more personal sign of respect than a phone call, especially when we are in the same city, a city that we all love. The message was not to the campaigners, many of whom have graced us with their presence, but it was truly for the MAPP family who have undergone a very public battle. Both of our families have had to endure much scrutiny and tough circumstances and until you have walked in those shoes you(the public) shouldn't judge anyone.

We are a team in victory and a team in defeat, the spin seeking writers will attempt to portray it differently, but WE delivered a message to the victorious MAPP family.

In the spirit of always moving Plainfield forward....

  11. Problem with that, Peter, is US and WE did not run for mayor. SHE did. When was the last time you saw the wife or husband of a candidate give the concession speech?

I understand the pain of losing, but this is classless, but typical. She could have just called him.

    1. Clarity here . . . Peter nor his WIFE -SRB -gave a concession SPEECH. Peter moved past and through the crowd, shook Mapp's hand, hugged Mrs. Mapp and bowed out -head first- through the crowd. Leaving the front line viewers saying, "Who was that guy?"

    2. From viewing SRB's Facebook page her pastor, Plainfield's Councilwoman at Large Reverend Tracey Brown commented:

"If God be for you, he is more than any political party against you." May 28 at 12:04pm

I would have to say -she knew "The Mission from God" was -YOU'RE GONNA LOSE.

  12. OK, let's look back. When Al McWilliams lost to SRB, did he go to SRB HQ and congratulate her? Did he call Jerry Green?

Same with Mapp. When Mapp lost to SRB, did Mapp go to her HQ 4-years ago?

    Just asking in all fairness.....

    2. No Mapp did not go to SRB HQ to congratulate her. In fact NO New democrat did!!!

  13. No, Al did not go to Dem HQ when he lost to Sharon, although it's customary to do so for an incumbent who loses.

I'm glad Peter went over to congratulate Adrian, but I really feel Sharon should have gone too, regardless. Peter is a class act--a real gem--and although Plainfield apparently has had enough of Sharon, I hope Peter will continue to do good things for the city.

  14. To 6pm - good questions. Would like to know if anyone called Sharon upon her win.

However, remember, none of these comments are coming from Mayor Mapp. It appears that whatever was done after his victory regarding his opponent is fine by him. Have not heard him make any negative comments.

  17. If sharon thought she was on a mission from God, she obviously didn't realize you can't hurt God's children and be successful. Didn't she learn anything from the downfall of recreation? She failed at destroying QCBL and she failed at having the opportunity to do it anymmore.

  18. To 5:17pm....
Thank you for all of your knowledge and experience about concession speeches and family values. As I stated WE decided to run for election because it is not an individual decision. After his many years of being a Councilman and a Freeholder ask Mrs. Mapp if she feels as if she was a part of his election. After the next four years ask her if she feels as if she has given a greater piece of herself to the City of Plainfield. Ask her if he made the decision to run or did they make a decision together. The words that you type don't come with an understanding of values and the sacrifices that are made, they come from a victor who is relishing the moment. That is okay, but everyone has their moments, some are short and some are long, but with the good comes the bad. When you are ready to speak up and identify I will gladly continue this conversation, but to speak this way is non-productive.

    To 6:00pm...
Thank you for your insight and memory. Experience teaches you many things, and there are many things you can't learn until you have experienced them. Looking back on those years, if I could do it all over again I should have gone to Mr. McWilliams and to Mr. Mapp to deliver a message of support from our family.

However ATYPICAL that may have been.

    Peter B.

  19. I stopped by city hall to pick up the election results yesterday. I got out of my car and saw the mayor talking with Corp Counsel and the IT Director. I went up one side of the back stairs, heading inside. The mayor then started coming up the other side (angrily) in an attempt to confront me. She began, "Well, Councilwoman Williams--!" I made sure that the door shut behind me. Someone who was getting out of a car happened to witness the mayor's true character. Graceless. Not pretty. I have no time for her histrionics, and one would think that she would use the time remaining in a more productive way, but that has never been her style. She has been a failure as a mayor. Plainfield agrees.

    2. Let me see if I understand Williams' description of her encounter with the Mayor the day after Williams' candidate soundly thrashed Her Honor at the poles. The Mayor addressed Williams entering City Hall. Williams, taking exception to the Mayor's perceived tone of voice and stride in mounting the stairs, refused to respond and closed (slammed?) the door in her face. Now she calls the Mayor "graceless," and "not pretty." (Way to kick a lady when she's down, RW.) Now she wants the Mayor to use her remaining time in office productively. How can the Mayor be productive when she has to deal with the likes of Rebecca Williams and her endless name calling and hissy fits? Regardless of what the Mayor is, once again, Williams is a sore winner.

  20. Councilwoman didn't kick her, SRB has been down for many years maybe that why she continues to bully the children of QCBL because she too has a child mind. Change is coming and we all know the song.....A Change is coming.

  21. Councilwoman Williams, you sure have a potty-filled mouth.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Rebeccca, that's no way to respond. At least you could have said hello, and if she started in on you, you could have just gone into the clerk's office--after all, that's why you were there in the first place. Why participate in creating any more animosity? Both you and Sharon should grow up!

    ReplyDelete
  23. My only comment is this: the best response is no response. The door "shut"--it didn't "slam"--if you know how that door works, it "shuts." I am not participating in creating "animosity"--I am commenting on a situation that demonstrates that the mayor has an inability to move forward. Her attacks on me last year for my Christian practices were unconscionable--she needs to go sit down somewhere. And, again, anyone who knows me knows that I do not curse--so the "potty-filled mouth" comment which has been made before is ridiculous.

Congratulations, Adrian, on your victory. Plainfield now has HELP--Honest, Ethical Leadership for Plainfield.
