Squirrels must gnaw or their teeth grow too long. They will chew on wood, wires, insulation - one even chewed an aluminum window frame in our hallway.
I don't know why they are protected in New Jersey, because they do enormous damage to structures. Removing them does not do much good because they are territorial, so new ones will move in and claim a house as their own.

They can be cute and photogenic - ask Jackie - but their marauding ways cannot be forgiven. I think they are as bad or worse than rats on a property.
