Dunn Provokes Mayor, Council Reaction Split

Outspoken resident and sometimes political operative Danny Dunn infuriated Mayor Adrian O. Mapp Monday when he claimed a group of young men said all they want is guns.

In public comment at the end of the council meeting, Dunn launched into a rambling speech that began with recounting an interview he said he had with the group in the West End. Quoting the youths as saying, "We need guns,".Dunn said, "These kids are angry."

In an apparent aside to police, he said , "They are going to take head shots at you," warning that "vests won't help."

Rather improbably, Dunn said the young men also asked him about bumper strips, a traffic-calming device that Dunn has requested for streets around the Hannah Atkins Playground.

Dunn urged establishment of a mini police station in the Fourth Ward and said, "You have to find the revenue to help these people."

Dunn also claimed to be quoting conversations he had with Police Director Carl Riley and the mayor, and said he had given the mayor a book called "The Bad Penny" about how to help kids.

When his five minutes were up, the council granted him additional time at the microphone and on camera for the local cable channel.

Mapp reacted by saying, "It pains me to have a citizen come before the microphone and spend seven minutes poisoning the reputation of our young people. Tell these young people to come to City Hall and talk.

"It does no good to come before the microphone to say all young people want is guns. Young people want jobs," Mapp said.

Mapp noted his administration's efforts to change the city's reputation and said of Dunn's seven-minute remarks, "That's wrong."

Councilwoman Gloria Taylor then told Dunn, "I do not in any way agree with the mayor," calling his response "pontificating" and saying, "Those of us in the city for a long time know it is not a perfect city."

Taylor said, "We shouldn't hide the truth under rocks," later adding, "That's the real world - that's what's going on in Plainfield."

After more remarks, she said, "We cannot ignore these young people who are at risk."

Taylor continued, commending Dunn and saying, "We've got to deal with these issues before they deal with us."

Councilwoman Vera Greaves disagreed.

"I live in the Fourth Ward," she said. "You can't paint everybody with the same brush. I totally disagree with you, Mr. Dunn."

Her voice rising, she said, "Because you think the Fourth Ward is less. Whatever happens in the Fourth Ward affects (Wards 1, 2 and 3.)"

Council President Bridget Rivers, who represents the Fourth Ward, said, "It kind of pains me to see you come to the mic and say that - to say young brothers and sisters are saying they all want guns. I am upset to hear you deliver that message."

"Guns do no one any good," Councilwoman Diane Toliver  said. "To shoot a policeman, that's horrible."

Toliver also said the young men needed jobs, not guns.

"We need to come together and support our police," she said

"I have a young adult son," she said. "My job is to pass on to him what made me successful."

Councilwoman Tracey Brown, a pastor whose church is in the Fourth Ward, said she thought there was something to each view, but that Dunn's account referred to "an isolated incident."
She said she sees Dunn doing positive things all the time.

Taylor and Greaves got into a back-and-forth  talk before resident Flor Gonzalez, president of the Plainfield Advisory Committee on Hispanic Affairs, spoke on the need for all to get together. She praised the mayor for what he is trying to do.

Resident Kim Montford recounted seeing a recent shooting victim lying in the street and said teens are "slipping through our fingers."

Near the end of the meeting, Rivers said she does believe there is a lot more to do for the youth, but said she is down in the Fourth Ward often and they do need jobs. She said she never wanted to see a child say "I want a gun."

"We want better for them," she said.

(Dunn's comments and the ensuing controversy came at the end of an otherwise decorous meeting which was recorded for viewing on local channels Comcast 96 and Verizon 34.)

  1. I was once one of those young men who live in the fourth ward. And we then and them now rather have a job over a gun any day. If I convey any message yo those young men it would be, A gun is not power but organized intelligence is. Education is empowerment ! Norman X Johnson

  2. Did Mr. Dunn tell the council what he is doing to help the situation?

    I thought he moved.

  3. I was wondering who still took anything Danny Dunn says seriously.

    2. Yes Dunn is a rather outspoken resident, however, most of what he speaks is self-serving and frankly, at times, unbelievable. I think Dunn spends too much time in the 4th ward with the gang-bangers with no positive results. What the heck is he interviewing them for, he could barely help himself. How can any reasonable person blame the Mayor for someone’s life choices. Since Tracy Brown has a church in the 4th ward where is her outreach program to try and change the minds of our youths that are supposedly asking for guns instead of asking for jobs? Should we blame her, Graves and Rivers who represent the 4th ward? There are a lot of decent hardworking people in the 4th ward but I never hear Dunn coming back to council meetings saying he spoke with them. Maybe Tracy’s church can start some type of outreach program to these young mothers that have no idea on how to raise a man-child to be law-abiding, productive citizens. Speaking of jobs, there are jobs available for those that want them and are willing to go out and get them. Can we please stop trying to dump all our social problems on the lap of the Mayor, adult men asking for guns instead of jobs is all about their moral character and aspirations. If we want to play the blame game, we can all share in that blame as a society. I guess Councilor Taylor does agree with Dunn, she appears to be just as self-serving as him. Can she please go on record with her accomplishments as the 3rd ward representative instead of making it her life mission to paint the Mayor in a negative light?

    3. To the commenters above, I think the writer was addressing Gloria Taylor but did not punctuate properly. Rev. Taylor has stated she does not read the blogs, so it is unlikely that she commented on Danny Dunn's remarks.

    4. That is correct Bernice. I am sorry for misleading. My point was that I can't believe anyone takes anything Dunn says seriously. Mrs Taylor must be the only one.

  4. Dunn's remarks sounded more apocryphal than anything, as they usually do, Bernice. You are being kind when you mention how these young people "improbably" then inquired about speed humps after inquiring about guns--smh. Ridiculous. It endlessly infuriates me to see demagogues come up to the mic week after week and suggest that our young people are would-be criminals with inbred violent impulses. Those are the kind of twisted, racist notions of inherent black criminality that continue to be perpetrated about black youth--it is sad to see black people internalizing racist perceptions about the young people in our own community. Mr. Dunn seems to enjoy coming to the mic to blather on about nonsense that doesn't even have the veneer of truth to it, and Queen Blatherer Gloria Taylor eats it up, as long as she can attack the Mapp administration. At the same time, she did NOT support earned sick leave, which would have helped those of our young people who are the primary wage earners in their homes--what a hypocrite. What young people need are jobs and opportunities--the current administration has sponsored several successful job fairs, has been able to get young people jobs in the public and private sector, and expanded the summer jobs program for Plainfield's young people. There is always more to be done, but I am pleased with the commitment of this administration and the level and consistency of outreach to the business community as well as to the public sector, such as the 100 U.S. Postal Service jobs that went to Plainfield residents after the administration hosted one of its job fairs. That is HUGE. So, to have these demagogues get on camera and talk in such an insulting, disparaging, and offensive (don't forget apocryphal) way about the young people of Plainfield is disgusting. They need to take several seats.

  6. I was very disappointed to see Mr. Dunn use those children he quoted as saying wanted guns. I believe it was his ploy to hurry the task of those speed bumps he has repeatedly requested despite being told there is a government process that it takes to get them. By inferring those young men would want to do harm to cops is to put a bigger target on their backs than there already is in this country. What other town has broadcast they have angry dangerous youth in their town. I believe Gloria Taylor has really shown her desire to condemn this mayor by any means necessary including allowing and confirming the demonization of our own children. She has to know to put that out there will taint our whole town.
I have worked with I dare say thousands of children in the City of Plainfield from all four wards in my programs from Plainfield PAL and my work in Recreation. I have never lost hope in our children that they didn’t want more out of life. They want positive activities and as they get older, they want jobs just like the Mayor said. But Ms. Taylor said he was living in a fantasy land?? I have young folks that have been through my programs that carry guns now, but they ARE POLICE OFFICERS, right here in Plainfield or currently being trained now to serve and protect. I am highly disturbed that enough voters didn’t see who they were voting for when they elected Mrs. Taylor. She has shown her contempt for Mayor Mapp since she was put on the council. Do your homework.
It’s just like all the drama with the baseball programs. That was viciousness amongst adults. The kids just wanted to play ball. Many parents have taken their children to out of town leagues to get away from the drama caused by adults.
So watch the adults’ behavior. There are so many opportunities in Recreation and throughout the city for young people. Why aren’t the folks who think that the kids are so angry not steering them to or sponsoring them to be in these programs. We have a lot of good kids here with a lot of potential. But just like you might say there are some kids who are bad apples, we have some grownup bad apples as well. Plainfield does not need this kind negativity and our children do not deserve this dangerous picture painted of them.

  7. Again .... there are PLENTY of jobs to be done in Plainfield. Correct not all of them are paying, but ANY person can ask their Aunts, Cousins and Neighbors if they can clean up/paint/carry groceries etc to keep busy and be productive. Will they all tip? No, but that is how life is. You can start to learn the skills of working for someone even at age 12 so that when you REALLY have mastered the handy man angle you will be in GREAT DEMAND ... believe me .... yes I carried groceries up to the second floor for people in the 4th Ward when I was 13 !!!!

  8. The best way for the Dunn's to help Plainfield is for the Dunn's not to help Plainfield.

  9. Did Mr. Dunn say anything to the kids who said they wanted guns? Did he say anything to them about how shooting a police officer in the head was sub-human? Did he seek out the guardians and try to help with getting the kids supervised? Did he go to the BOE and scream bloody murder that the kids in this town are barely getting an education?

  10. Thanks, Mr. Dunn, for validating every bigots notion that black kids (boys specifically) are unmotivated thugs. All they want to do is carry guns, shoot cops, and sell drugs. You make it sound like the parents/guardians in the 4th ward can't control their kids, or could care less about them.

How about doing something positive for them like perhaps get them to Councilwoman Brown's church. I agree with 4:29p - not only do they have a bad education, but who is going to keep in their employ a kids whose value system thinks it's OK to shoot innocent people and steal? Are you thinking?
