Election News and Reminders

Plainfield Elections 2016
News and Advisories

Councilwoman Tracey Brown has launched a website in her bid for re-election to the Citywide at-large seat.

The other seat up this year is for the Third Ward, currently represented by Councilwoman Gloria Taylor. Democrat and Republican candidates who want to run in the June primary must file by 4 p.m. Monday, April 4. Independents can file on Monday, July 25.

Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, who is chairman of the Democratic City Committee, held a meeting Friday to set up a screening committee, among other things.

The Board of Education decided to use the New Jersey School Board Association's Candidate Kit's petition. Filing date is Feb. 29.

Republicans will elect committee members in June for two-year terms. The city has 34 voting districts in its four wards, and voters may choose a male and female candidate in each district for a possible total of 68 committee members. Democrats outnumber Republicans by about 13 to 1 in Plainfield and the GOP was only able to fill 15 out of 68 seats in June 2014.

  1. Brown has an endorsement from Sen. Stephen Sweeney. Is this the same Stephen Sweeney that endorsed a slanderous flyer that was mailed to Plainfield residents saying that the Mayor, a democratic city council member and a democratic council candidate were all members of the Republican Tea Party. The same man that made this deduction without stepping a foot in Plainfield or having a conversation with any of its residents or the people he was slandering.

    SMH – uninterested.

  2. I hope any current City Council members planning on running again realize this must go through the Democratic City Committee and not assume that they will automatically on the line. Their performance while in office and their constituents' wishes will be considered and no amount of advertising will guarantee them to be on the party line.

    2. I don't know what this has to do with Charlotte or Jerry. They do not control Plainfield or how we vote, so let's move ourselves forward and make Plainfield a great place to live.

  3. Yes the same Steve Sweeney who sent that ignorant letter because Jerry Green asked him to. It was also Jerry's doing to get Brown to do the prayer at the state house. Looks like last gasp favors from Green, the same Green who said he would not get involved in the local Democratic races when he lost the chairmanship. I bet Sweeney met Brown 5 seconds before this photo was taken. I hope the Democrats have a good candidate to replace Brown who has obstructed progress and made personal invective against the mayor and staff her calling card. Her endorsement from the previous mayor might not help her.

  4. Robin, Everyone knows that you are a Mapp yes person and will try to bad mouth anyone that does not agree with Mapp or his followers. I don't like the fact that Rev.Brown is a politician she is too good for that. I tell her that all the time, the things that she does for people and the heart she has is bigger than all the oceans in the world combined. Most of you who badmouth her don'teven know her, just the fact that she was endorsed by people you all hate for whatever reason. She knows that Mapp is not giving her the line and that she will be running off line. I simply tell her to run away from the mess that is Plainfield Politics.Plainfield has a mayor that is power hungry. He wants to control not only city hall, but PMUA, the Board of Ed., and the Housing Authority. Plainfield Beware. Lee Evans

    1. Hi Lee, I feel at a disadvantage here since I don’t know who you are, I would love to meet you. Please feel free to introduce yourself to me at the next public meeting we both attend. It sounds like you think I was attacking Councilor Brown, when all I did was state some facts about Sen. Sweeny. There was no need for you to go on the attack.

I do know a lot of people in Plainfield and anyone that knows me, know that I am not a YES girl. I do really care about this city and I want it to be something we all can be proud of. In fact, I have the tendency to challenge anything that I feel is not in the best interest of Plainfield. I’m not always right and there is so much that I don’t know, but I am always open to others opinion, ideas and discussions. I’m sure we both want the same things, lower taxes, the best representation in our government officials, quality education for our children, basically a quality of life that afford us peaceful, clean and safe communities.

Anon 11:34AM, Sweeney and Rev. Tracey Brown met when he personally invited her to have lunch with him months ago not as a council person, but as a religious leader and the first African American woman to lead a Baptist Association. She was contacted by the chief of Staff for Sweeney, they wanted a woman and a minority.

  6. The issues I have with Councilwoman Brown are her numerous abstentions and absences from meetings excused by her duties as a reverend. I would like someone who would view counsel responsibilities as their priority.

  7. There is no room for religion in politics. Ms. Brown can continue to do all the good she wants via her ministry.

Brown is part of Plainfield's most recent guard which spans well over 30+ years in which Plainfield has remained stagnant and and in crisis.

Tracey Brown benefits when Plainfield stays status quo and the underprivileged remain dependent on her services, afterall, that's what keeps her and her cohorts gainfully employed and attractive at election time.

Plainfield has been making some very positive strides in the past 2 years. Let's keep moving in that direction.

The reason I know about the lunch meeting is because after a United Clergy meeting, held in Roselle,N.J.,it was initiated by me.

  10. Lalo we know your loyalty. Councilwoman Brown is gainfully employed because she has an undergraduate degree, and a Masters I believe. She worked as a teacher, and social worker for DYFS.She has always helped people regardless of socioeconomic status, or whatever side of the tracks they lived on.How about you? 11. @Lee Evans: Considering we don't know each other, the only thing you know about me is what you can infer from my comments, that is, Tracey Brown is an ineffective leader and part of a larger machine that has kept Plainfield and its residents stagnant for 30+ years.

We all know many well educated people who are ineffective in their roles as leaders. Regardless of whatever good she does on her personal/professional time as a pastor and, regardless of whatever jobs she has held and special recognition she has received, Ms. Brown's public comments and voting record while on the PMUA and now the City Council, has demonstrated her selective approach to representation and varying degrees of self-interest.

As for me, I've done my share of volunteering and assisting humans in need, however, it's a non-issue as I am not a positioning myself for a run in public office – as a tax payer, my main objective is making sure we have unbiased candidates who can offer us ALL the best possible representation.

  12. Lalo: Rev. Tracey Brown not a good leader, that is the biggest lie ever told. She was influential in convincing some council people in approving two redelopment projects, she is a part of the paid sick leave project, she is apart of legislation to increase minimum wage, and a part of legislation to remove the box when filling out job applications. She has been a part of politics for three years in the city, therefore not apart of the 30 year stagnation.I only brought up her education because you implied the church is the cause of her being gainfully employed, she took a pay cut becoming fulltime pastor. She was able to set up shelters for seniors and people during Super Storm Sandy. She is a great leader not just for people who are disenfranchised, but the things she has championed benefits the have and the have nots. You seem to be an expert on her, but you really are totally off.She stood up to the Green Machine involving the Liberty Village fiasco. She is a very good leader. You also write as though somebody who cares about the marginalized should not be in leadership, they are the one's that should. The healthy does not need a doctor. Done with you Lalo stop degrading people character without knowing the facts. Lee Evans
