Chief of Staff Title, Salary On Tuesday's Agenda

The council packet for Tuesday's meetings was available after all, I found out Saturday afternoon. Above is a description of the duties of the Chief of Staff, a new position that is expected to be created by ordinance on first reading at the regular meeting Tuesday. (Click on image to enlarge) An accompanying 'salary band" ordinance will set a range of $60,000 to $95,000 for compensation.

Another ordinance amends a previous salary band for the title of chief financial officer, increasing the range from $95,000 to $155,000. The maximum had been $110,000 before it was increased in February 2012 to $125,000. The city has apparently been unable to attract a CFO since then and is still relying on the part-time services of Glenn Cullen, who is the full-time borough administrator and CFO of South Plainfield.

The two-part meeting has an agenda-fixing session at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Municipal Court, 325 Watchung Ave., followed by a regular meeting at 8 p.m.

The packet had a couple of other interesting items, which will be covered in other posts over the weekend.

  1. grant opportunities alone would pay for such a title if the person were well versed in the process.... so this person couldn't be a political lackey for it to make sense, it would be cool to have an individual who actually did this job

  2. Perhaps, though it could also be an ambitious political person. Not exactly a lackey, but...

  3. If our current Mayor was trying to do this, it wouldn't be so cool to you. You guys are such hypocrites who claim to love the city, you only love it when it goes your way or you get what you want.

    1. Really.. I for one would be willing to pay some additional taxes to get some more educated and talented people rather than a former councilman niece or Barbara James another lacky.

    2. mmmmmmmmmm....... You seem to have missed my part about it "not being a political lackey" ... I'm far from convinced... Jim McGreevey is the first sign that the ash heap of dead political Democratic has-beens is being farmed

  4. I wonder what will happen to the "confidential aide" position created by Sharon when she became mayor?

  5. Maybe she'll put out all of Sharon's "confidences" out there in return for a job...

  6. Curious as the why we would create another full time position instead of maybe just modifying the charter and creating a full time mayors post. Haven't checked to see what the threshold is for towns to have a full time mayor but if we are going to increase spending on full time positions maybe its time to have a full time mayor instead - and avoid adding additional layers. Obviously the mayors salary would need to be increased but better to increase that salary with the funds planned/requested for additional positions.

    1. That would be a good idea, and might actually attract some decent candidates to the mayoral contest. We just had a Charter Commission which could have offered changes that improved representation and limited the ability of central party committees to dictate the party line in a one party town. But alas, the commission was comprised of party regulars aligned with Adrian Mapp and his cult of administrative job-seekers/job hoppers, and it figured the best changes were just to make the Charter gender neutral.

    2. Very true - too bad they weren't thinking ahead - they could have given Mapp a full time position with a better salary, much shorter commute and no need to juggle so many things. Kind of funny actually.
