Those "Phenomenal Women" Awards

By way of explanation, those "Phenomenal Women" awards given by Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs were supposed to be for Women's History Month on behalf of the the Democratic City Committee and "on behalf of the City of Plainfield," according to the mayor, who said she wanted to honor four women "in a special way."

Awardees were widows and one daughter of City Committee members, with recognition also given to each "beloved man."  They were Geraldine Smith, whose husband Hugh passed away in 2011; Dottie Gutenkauf, whose husband Josef passed away in December; and Pat and Karen Brown, wife and daughter of the late Charles D. "Pete" Brown, who passed away in September 2012. In her mother's absence, Karen Brown accepted their awards.

  1. So their spouses had to die for them to be "Phenomenal Women" ?
Wow... Kind of a stick in the eye for equality.

  2. AS usual, the mayor has no clue. They ar "phenomenal women" why?

All I got out of it was that their husbands dies.

Not only is the mayor clueless, but unprofessional. This was not the venue to for giving these women the awards. Clueless, classless, and unprofessional.

  3. If the mayor wants to give me a "phenomenal woman" award for what I am and what I do, that makes sense--in fact, she did, several years ago. But to give me one now because my husband died? Now that is NONSENSE and a clear political ploy, and I ain't buying. Joe would laugh at the very idea.

  4. Really Mayor, other than Dottie, who are these women and what have they contribute to the community?

  5. This is sad - very, very sad. Seems like another "oops" moment for that SRB, I mean, Sharon Robinson-Briggs.

  6. Well of course it was political. And not too smart. Sharon could have made a real honor, but this was not it. Her whole presentation was a thin attempt to present herself as mayoral. Without Jerry at her back, it's going to be tough going. Sharon can't leave office fast enough. A lot of her prior supporters are disgusted with her behavior. Next!
