Charlotte Resigns, What Next?

Expect a lot of ripples from the news that Charlotte DeFilippo is resigning as chairman of the Union County Improvement Authority and will not seek another term as Union County Democratic Party chairman in June.

It is unknown right now what all the effects will be. Plainfield's own Democratic Party chairman, Jerry Green, has already announced on PolitickerNJ that he has paid his political dues and will seek the county chair. He is currently the chair of the Plainfield Democratic Party, which will reorganize on June 10. But first he has to win re-election to his District 22 Assembly seat on June 4, when he and running mate Linda Stender face a challenge from Republican John Campbell Jr., son of Queen City kingmaker John Campbell and Board of Education President Wilma Campbell.

While it is not quite in the realm of the Pope resigning nor even of Queen Beatrix stepping down, Charlotte's voluntary departure is sure to generate lots of speculation until matters are settled in June. One stream of political gossip involves past and present leadership of another authority, the PMUA, said to be backing Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs against Councilman Adrian Mapp in a rematch of their 2009 battle. Charlotte's imperious mandate that Mapp should have the party line this year now has somewhat of a hollow ring, now that she is abdicating her power, and Green's look outward to a larger county role signals a possible void here.

A majority of PMUA commissioners already hold seats on the Democratic Party Committee, but their power behind the scenes is more to the point in this climate of emerging possibilities. Re-election of the mayor, and a council with a former PMUA commissioner holding the swing vote, could mean the authority will become more of a political power base than it already has become since early 2012. Remember the $1 million settlement, passed with three votes?

So on this sunny spring day when Mother Nature should rule, human nature is on the minds of many. Politics makes strange bedfellows, and never more when one falls out. How will the "bunny on the outside" scenario play out in 2013?  In the kiddie song, the bunnies gang up on the survivor and reclaim their status. What happens in Union County remains to be seen.

  2. Charlotte stepping down just shows that greedy politicians can't always get what they want and the vast majority of voters don't know who she is. Will this effect the Plainfield election? Unlikely. People in Plainfield are so tired of our tired and not very honest mayor that this doesn't help her at all. The fact that the PMUA is backing Sharon is good for Mapp. The two things people in Plainfield hate the most are the mayor's office and the mayor and the PMUA. If anyone thinks this will translate for Sharon in the voting booth, they better think twice. Even staunch Sharon supporters are no longer on board. Sharon is still ripping off the taxpayers by having city employees do her campaign work on the city's dime. I'm convinced that's why she keeps her office cloaked so it's as non-transparent as her other crooked dealings. Goodbye Sharon!!!

  3. The Democrats in Union County who've been riding the gravy train at the expense of the tax payers ought to be sweating bullets right now...Cause when push comes to shove...people are going to throw Charlotte under the bus and she'll take a few down with her to be sure.... sad really... and they all just proclaimed how they were going to "get along" suddenly.. tsk tsk.. can't wait to see this scramble for the life boats and all the apologist step forward and proclaim their support in hopes she beats this rap........ Ain't nothing like seeing "family" fight it out... You reap what you sow!
