I am very concerned about the selection of shrub roses. For seasonal color the proposed design had called for Stella D Oro perennial day lilies that die back to the ground in the late fall and emerge again in the spring and require limited maintenance. These "shrub roses" require hand pruning to maintain the natural form and to insure that new flower heads emerge. If the City could not maintain the yew hedge which requires one to two cutting per year with electric hedge sheers do you suppose they will hand prune these roses 5-6 times per year. I don't think so. Yet again people making decisions without the proper knowledge and background.
I'll say this... I moved into an apartment in one of the Victorians downtown.. the backyard was a complete mess and was full of roses... EVERYWHERE. Uncared for etc.. but I've brought them all back to nice health. Roses are meant for those who don't work or are retired. I'm tempted to tear them up, but out of respect for the property and the woman who planted them here 50yrs ago I won't. I try and care for them as best I can, but inevitably mid July/Aug... I fail..and they look like hell. They are a lot of work, on this I'll agree.
I have been reporting on Plainfield for more than 30 years, first at the Plainfield Today weekly, then at the Courier News and after retirement on the Plainfield Plaintalker blog and its successor, Plaintalker II.

Gosh, there's no "RE-ELECT SHARON" sign in the photo--did you miss it or wasn't it there at all?
ReplyDeleteIs Sharon making this her last act as mayor? It is to hope!
Which Shakespearean scholar thought of "The Taming of the Yews"? Very clever!
