County Posts Voter Statistics

Plainfield Democrats now outnumber Republicans more than 15 to 1, according to voter statistics released Friday by the Union County Board of Elections.

The ratio was about 8 to 1 here before the 2008 election that gave the nation its first African-American president, Barack Obama. Whether voters will go to the polls for the 2014 mid-term elections is another question.

Locally, there are three council seats and three school board seats up for election. To see a breakdown of registered voters by ward and district, see "affiliation statistics" here and scroll down to Plainfield. First Ward City Council candidate Diane Toliver is running unopposed, so barring an unlikely write-in campaign, she will win no matter what the turnout. There is no council race in the Fourth Ward this year. That leaves the focus on contests for the unexpired Third Ward term and the Second & Third Ward at-large seat.

Voters in all four wards will have a say in choosing the three school board winners out of a field of seven. This race is supposed to be non-partisan, but has generated more Democratic campaigning than in the past.

Party affiliations do not matter in the general elections. Voters in any category can pick and choose across party lines as they wish. Besides 13,177 Democrats and 865 Republicans, Plainfield has 8,087 unaffiliated, or independent, voters who could not take part in the June primary but can vote in the general election.

The next step for voters is to take a good look at their sample ballots, which should arrive soon by mail. Look for your polling place and hours for voting in addition to reviewing the candidates and questions. And please make sure you vote on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

  1. After years of receiving complimentary health insurance courtesy of PMUA, we should all be glad Diane Toliver is running unopposed for City Council. No doubt she will also weigh in when any Council votes are cast concerning the Authority, where she will join Councilwoman Tracey Brown, another recipient of the illegal fare, in bringing their unique style of official accountability to the mix. And the mayor, whose job it is to enforce the City's ordinances and charter, awards one of the ringleaders of this particular PMUA abuse with the title of Acting Director of Public Works and Urban Development, proving how very special we are indeed.

  2. People should apply for absentee ballots. If you cannot muster the energy for applying for the ballot, then we deserve to be the state with the highest property taxes (by the way, when the Republicans were in power in NJ we were the 4th friendliest state in which to do business - now we are 49th well on our way to 50).

Lazy group we are - but we sure know how to complain. Vote and make a difference - PLEASE.

  3. Yes please vote, but be sure not to vote for any republicans that consider us lazy. We all know that's how they feel about us and our President, according to them, all were looking for is a hand-out.

    1. You would rather have corrupt Jerry Green-led hacks on the City Council?

  4. I am so tired of voting against a candidate rather than for a candidate. All the politicians seem to be in bed together. The ultimate betrayal was Adrian Mapps apointment of Eric Watson. Why haven't we heard any
objections from Rebecca Williams or Cory Storch.? It seems deals have been made, The next shoe to drop
will be the apartments going up @ Muhlenberg. I've said it before, and I will say it again...What this city needs is a mass tax appeal by all the homeowners, that is the only way change will come about....no money!!!

  5. This year after the primary, the Dem's didn't do their usual "hug fest" ( we're all one big happy Corrupt Family Dance .. I mean, Koumbaya Sing Along )... I guess Rebecca did something right..

  6. The people of Plainfield need to educate themselves regarding the political process. Stop looking at situations on the National level and be more concerned with what's going on in your own City/State. Hold the elected officials accountable for what's going in Plainfield. Learn about the different political parties so that you can make better voting decisions. The democrats have ran this town in a hole and, are still re-elected time and time again. So, stop complaining and better voting decisions.

    Thank you,
    VB

  7. from many voters that I talk to they are looking to break the city council gridlock it seem that they want to see a change this is coming from the people that are 99%dems it seem they want to see some new faces on the city council via and now they have a choice to vote for the change, even if they are democrats are independent. note- there is two seats open 2nd and 3rd at large seat. and the 3rd ward seat. it seem as if the 2nd &3rd ward at large council seat
could be the one that maybe open for a change of voice and face on the city council.
this is the talk of Plainfield the democrats may cast their votes to a republican if only to show their disapproval and a need for a new change of face!
what do you think?and do the republicans have a candidate that would be a good change that we democrats should vote for.open for advice and thought
    it is a ward
