Tax Lien List Tells Tales

A 15-page list of delinquent payers of municipal taxes and PMUA bills included 42 items for Dornoch Plainfield LLC. It would appear that taxes are owed for 41 of the 63 condos in the East Front Street building known as "The Monarch."

The amount contrasts with Corporation Counsel Dan Williamson's statement at a May 1 budget meeting that he believes between 24 to 30 have been sold. Originally, a Veterans' Center on the ground floor of the building was to be turned over to veterans' groups only after all the condos were sold. But sales lagged in a slow market and the company began renting the units. A new agreement calls for hand-off of the center after two years or when the fiftieth unit is sold, Williamson said. If in fact only 22 have sold, the 50-unit mark may be a long way off.

As usual, the tax lien list contains quite a few prominent names. If not paid by June 14, the liens will be sold off, buyers will pay the amounts owed and the delinquents will then owe the buyers the arrears plus up to 18 percent interest. Lien holders can move to foreclose in two years if not paid.

The largest single amount owed appears to be $123,438.80 for Belle Gardens LLC at 733-47 East Front Street, for PMUA services. The total Dornoch tax bill is about $50,000. Plainfield Neighborhood Health Services owes more than $42,000 to PMUA and the Housing Authority of Plainfield owes more than $61,000, according to the list..

The reason the list runs to 15 pages at a cost of nearly $18,000 is that it is a single, large-print column per page instead of two per page as in the past. The list is due to run again on June 7, if you want to take a look. (Hmm. Wonder how the pay wall affects notification.)

  1. It doesn't seem that the Monarch has been very good for Plainfield. Why do our politicians do this and will they learn from their mistakes and not throw out the baby with the bath water when making concessions to these builders. I hope they don't make the same mistakes in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.

    1. It might have been the other way around. Maybe the developer was pushed to come up with something that looked like a campaign coup for the mayor, but it ultimately was not viable as touted.

  2. And the Teppers basement. I wonder if the City Council has ever gotten in there to take a look. We know that is paying off royally with bags-o'-campaign cash going to Jerry Green like clockwork.

  3. The Tax Lien is telling more than just what you wrote Bernice. It demonstrated that the Mayor is not responsible for her own property nor the new PMUA Executive Director with his. It's all there in black/white.

  4. WOW! I see the PMUA New Executive Director is on the Tax Sale list for not paying his PMUA bill. I guess the bill is HIGH to him too. He should be ashamed of himself. So what message is he sending to the public as the ED.

  5. Someone please help me understand, if we cannot write off the PMUA bill on our taxes, how is it that the city can sponsor a tax lien on outstanding PMUA bills? In light of all that has taking place with the PMUA the city should seriously put those tax liens on hold. I understand they need the money to pay the million dollar payout but, should we have to turn our homes over to do this?

    Is this a typo? How on earth does a 15-page list cost $18K??

    1. The cost is $17,735.52 and it will run again on June 7, so the cost is for two runs. However, if it had been formatted better than one column down a page with white space on both sides, it would probably be half that amount.

  7. Is Sharon and her husband on the list? I have not seen it, but heard that owed around $1,500.00.

    If so - UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!! Not really.

  8. There needs to be legislation, if it is not permissable already to allow municipalities to publish the list on a City's official website. As newspapers go the pay as you read route, will the public have access to read the legal notice in the newspaper anyway. Someone needs to dig into the high cost for advertising.

  9. The new executive director will get a reduced bill once he becomes employed by the PMUA. Ask some of the commissioners who DON'T pay the same as the rest of us. If someone performed an audit of the last five years, you could easily follow the trail of "credits"

  10. Plainfield should also know that the MAYOR and her husband are on the lien list for not paying their sewer charges of over $1500, which is about a years worth. Yet she wants to do a "study" within her administration and with the PMUA whose new director, her corporation counsel Dan Williamson is also on the list for over $2000. They owe PMUA thiusands of dollars and they have the nerve to act like they want to do something about it! What are our seniors supposed to do who are being forced from their homes? And her friend and pastor Tracey Brown says nothing.
