Can you see the Yews? The hedge at City Hall that was severely pruned for rejuvenation is now taking a back seat to Knockout Roses and Coreopsis. Both promise lots of color through summer and early fall while the Yews develop new growth.
Click here for the "before" photo. It will take about 18 months for the Yews to fill out. Meanwhile, stop by and smell the roses!

Red Roses nonetheless! The red knockout roses are sure to provide a nice and lively sight to those who pass by. Coreopsis, I think they are yellow, will be much of the sunshine that we, those who walk and visit city hall, need around here!
ReplyDeleteI am now wondering if after people see how beautiful the grounds can be without the yews they will now be hoping the city does without them at the end.
Thanks for the update Bernice!
We want the yews to grow back. They will give the border a rich green evergreen background. In the meantime, I am very happy with the planting. It was a compromise and it worked. My thanks to all who worked together.

Red is to remind us when Sharon is gone what her favorit color is. It is mine too, but I would have preferred several colors to really brighten the place up. So, even when Sharon is gone, we will still have a reminder of her. I wish the yews didn't have to be cut back so far. I hope they got an expert to give advice on this, as their care of our trees seems to be poorly done.
ReplyDeleteMaria: Tim is right. The yews will provide some winter color and are historically correct.
ReplyDeleteBob: the Historic Preservation Commission as well as the Shade Tree Commission and the Garden Club all advised on this. Part of our advice was that the landscaping should not compete with the building, which is on the State and National Historic registers. And since Bernice shot the photo, very nice benches have gone in, and the light poles were due to go up this afternoon.
