A Puzzlement

When I saw this notice on the city web site, I felt like one of those cartoon characters with a bunch of question marks over the head. Did Social Services move downtown? How could a spot be located on both sides of Park Avenue at once? How is this different from another announcement that the Senior Center at 400 East Front Street and Washington School on Darrow Avenue are warming centers?

This garbled message is confusing and worthless to someone who needs to stay at a warming center.

  1. I think we need to take a look at these warming centers. How many people go to them? Are addresses taken of the people who are there?

No one who has an addresss should be at one of these centers. If they are, it says to me that their landlord is treating them like animals. So while I understand the need for these shelters if you are homeless, if you pay rent, you should not need to go. If you do, it means that your landlord is really a slum lord, and the city needs to impose fines and the landlord should be publicly revealed. I understand that in the meantime people need to be warm. But that is the reason why you take addresses. Return visitors means that the landlord has done nothing to rectify the problem. And, if the renters don't have heat, what else is their landlord depriving them of?

  2. It is not confusing to me because I have been to the building. The address is for the Park Madison Building which is located at the intersection of Park Avenue and East Front Street.

The part that bothers me is the delay in posting this message and the fact that you have to go to an office to find out where the locations are.

What is not mentioned is whether this is a day center or an overnight temporary shelter. If you have a place to stay that is not keeping you warm enough a day center may be adequate but if you are homeless, what happens overnight?

  3. The homeless issue needs to be addressed for a year round resolution, not just excessive hot or cold days.

If you have a place to stay that is not keeping you warm enough, you have a slum lord for a land lord and that person needs to be put in jail.
