Muhlenberg Future Up for Discussion at Three Meetings

City officials have announced three community meetings for public discussion of the future of the Muhlenberg site.

The meetings, all at 7 p.m., will take place on March 27 in the Plainfield High School cafeteria, April 24 at Washington Community School and April 29 at Emerson School.

The sessions were promised as part of a city-sponsored planning study that was approved last October. The timetable called for three community meetings in the second, third and fourth months of the project, with an outcome anticipated by six months.

JFK Health System, owners of the campus where Muhlenberg was shuttered in August 2008, had proposed 600 luxury apartments for the site in March 2012 and last year gained the backing of certain clergy in Plainfield. No sooner did the council approve the city study than JFK shut down the "Muhlenberg Moving Forward" web site describing the proposal for apartments and an enhanced emergency care facility. Blog commenters feared retaliation, JFK spokesman Adam Beder had no comment and not much more was heard on the subject.

Most recently, Assemblyman Jerry Green mentioned at a Democratic City Committee meeting that he knew of a developer who was interested in the campus. Green said he wants a medical facility there.

"That's my dream before I move on," Green said at the Friday meeting.

  1. I trust the entire city council, Assemblyman Green, Freeholder Linda Carter and Mayor Mapp will be in attendance to answer questions and address issues. I also hope that the city will do a mailing, especially in the 3rd ward and post the meeting on the city’s website. The March 27 meeting was announce for the first time at the Cedar Brook Block Association meeting, which leads me to believe that they decided that day to schedule this first community meeting. If the city doesn’t publicize this meeting in the proper way and the people don’t know about it, will the city assume they can do whatever they want because enough people did not speak out. Their whole strategy on the Muhlenberg property seems to be to drag this out in hopes of discouraging everyone with more meetings until you think no one cares.

As far as Assemblyman Greens comment that he knew of a developer who was interested in the property, that’s nothing new, he’s been saying that from day one. What he hasn’t said is what plans this developer has for the property. Could it be the same developer who wants to build a 600 unit apartment building with a state of the art emergency room?

  4. I am sorry to say this but the Assemblyman is so out of touch with everything that frankly his help is far worse than if he did nothing at all. Please sir just go away, collect your pension and leave us to pick up the pieces. Your ghetto mentality and those of your hand chosen city council members have done little to help this once beautiful city. We are now on pare with Detroit, Camden and Newark. Thanks but no thanks.
