Any Comments on Thursday Meetings?

Something came up last night and I could not attend any of the scheduled meetings.

If you went to the Planning Board, Listening Session for Youth Summit or Third Ward meeting, tell us what you thought.

  1. With orange hair brighter than a newly painted fire hydrant, Third Ward Councilwoman Gloria Taylor, along with aide-de-camp Sharon Robinson Briggs, expropriated the Third Ward Town Hall meeting. Instead of a bottom-up meeting with an agenda dictated by resident's questions and concerns, as is typical of previous City Council townhalls, this was a top-down affair co-opting Specal Improvement District management, the school superintendent, the police, and the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District, each giving lengthy presentations and leaving no time for residents to ask anything but brief questions of the presenters themselves. Such a meeting could have been held at any time in any ward. If the City Council continues to authorize townhall meetings, there should be a single established format, and they should be spread out over the course of a year and not jammed into a short time span as a means to play catch up. This was not a townhall in any respect, just another meeting where 'officialdom' set the agenda and (most) residents took a back seat.

  3. Reluctantly I attended Councilor Gloria Taylors’ 3rd ward meeting. Can I just say, what a waste of tax payers money and resources. The meeting and Gloria’s invited guest or presenters, whatever you want to call them, was uninviting and left me feeling like I had been robbed. The Councilor in her attempt to what I could only surmise was to upstage the Mayor with her version of a city town hall meeting fell short, very short. It was like a meal of potatoes and no meat or cereal with no milk, it was dry and lack substance. I felt bad for Councilor Brown who was sitting at one of the two tables in front of the audience. She looked uncomfortable and out of place. For the life of me I don’t see why any council member bother to support her, after all, the meeting was all about her and her perceived power. By Councilor Taylors’ own declaration, “she and her planning team put the event on”. Not one member of her planning team was a fellow council member. Here’s the funny part, Sharon Robinson Briggs is a member of her planning team and by all appearance seemed to be the organizer of this event. There was approximately 50 people in attendance, 15 of which consisted of her presenters, approximately 20 was bused from the senior citizen apartment building and maybe 10 homeowners in the 3rd ward. Most of which was supporters of Robinson-Briggs and a few of her supporters from other wards. Taylor left approximately six minutes at the end of the meeting for audience questions. The only one that went to the mike was non-other than Danny Dunn. Dunn applauded Taylor for putting on such a fabulous event saying, this is just want the city needed. Gloria recognized and acknowledge everyone in the room with the exception of newly elected 4th ward council member Barry Good. At the very end of the meeting when most people had departed, she mention his presences. Such disrespect for someone she called to asked if he could attend.

This should be a lesson learn for all of Gloria’s colleagues on the council. Keep this in mind when choosing a new council president. This was clearly the Gloria Taylor and Sharon Robinson-Briggs meeting. It had nothing to do with the 3rd ward constituents. SHAME, SHAME SHAME.

  4. I attended the meeting last night at Hubbard not really knowing what to expect, but to my utter surprise it was a wonderful community meeting.Councilwoman Taylor did a great job organizing the meeting. Now of course her haters and Mapps supporters which are the same will criticize the meeting, but even some of mapps supporters found it positive and informative but would never let him know it. There were people there that will find fault in everything and never see the good in anything. I was very impressed with our superintendent of schools she was sharp and professional.I wish Plainfielders will stop taking sides and come together, but I know that will never happen to much hate, malice, envy , racism, we will never have unity in this city, never. The administration is mean and very vindictive, the council don't have a clue, some will support whatever the mayor says because he gets their girlfriends, and boyfriends jobs. The meeting was good, just did not leave enough time for the public to speak, although when the floor was open no one came forward. Happy Holidays. Lee Evans

  5. I too found it informative. I learned more about the inner workings of the SID, schools, police technology and the benefits of a strong community through an organized neighborhood. There were some positive lessons to be learned from this meeting.

  6. Bob, I have never had a conversation with Councilwoman Taylor. You are a prime example of the ignorance and sarcasm that keeps this city divided. I can careless about your pathetic mayor, and clueless council.I just gave my opinion on a meeting that I attended because I was bored. The problem in this town is no one respects opinions if it does not agree with their's.Grow up Bob. 1. I have had conversations with her, I am not a fan of her know-it-all attitude and Sharon way of doing things. If that means I need to grow up, then I never will. Taylor is out for Taylor and Jerry, not her constituents. I've talked to many who are not pleased with her performance on the City Council and she will have to run as an independent, as I don't think the City Democratic Committee will put her on the ballot.

  7. To anon, 10:45, Robin B, did not give facts, she gave her SUBJECTIVE take on the meeting, so did Alan. They are both Mapp people who will only do and say what Mapp wants to hear.I did not attend the meeting but heard it was positive.

    1. Alan's remarks may have been subjective, but I believe very substantive. I agree that the Ward meetings should focus on the people of Plainfield and their issues/concerns. If Taylor wants to put on another type of community activity, that's great, but it should be separate from the Ward meetings. I think having a standardized agenda so everyone knows what to expect is an efficient way of handling the event. There is nothing stopping Taylor from doing her type of community forum anytime she wishes.
