One of the worries about new development is what it will do to Plainfield as we know it now. I came across this February 2014 post on gentrification while looking around my archives and thought it might be worth a second look.
Who Are The Gentrifiers in Plainfield?

The real gentrifiers are the politicians who are in collusion with private investment dollars .
ReplyDeleteGentrification had not crossed my mind until the new apartment complex went up on South Ave. The woman showing the apartments seemed very put off by the people who came to the open house. Especially when she made it plain, with a disgusted look on her face, that all but 1 of the units were already taken.
ReplyDeletePlease watch this video from start to finish. We need to start organizing to prevent gentrification (the displacement of people) in Plainfield. I believe we can keep Plainfield affordable by establishing rent control laws, an enforcement bureau and legal aid for tenants. There is no need to give tax breaks to developers. This is a very desirable community to live in. I love the people of Plainfield and I want to keep them here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqogaDX48nI
ReplyDeleteTo Anon 10:21: Thanks for your post. Gentrification, in itself, is not a negative thing. But, when in practice, it is the systematic process of preferring one type of individual (by race, social-economics, lifestyle) over another, that's when the problem occurs. To me it was made clear by the developers early on their building would be tailored for a certain type of person. Walking wallets was their term. It will be very curious how they go about determining that...
ReplyDeleteGround hasn't even be broken in and they claim all the units were taken.... Doubt that.

Richard, the other side just past Woodland. Not the new Sleepy Hollow one. The new apts rented very quickly. People want new and they are willing to pay for it. They do not want he old, poorly maintained dumps in town.
