Pool Report

Councilwoman Rebecca Williams, who serves on the council's Recreation and Public Safety committees, passes along an update on the status of city pools:

The following Municipal Pools have passed the required Health Inspection and will open at 12:30pm today Saturday, June 28, 2014.

1.        Rushmore Pool:  Kiddie Wading Pool only.  The main pool pvc liner is unrepairable, the liners will be removed and pool restored to concrete.
2.       Seidler Field Pool will open main and Kiddie Wading Pool.

Failed Inspection
3.       Hannah Atkins:  Both pools failed due to the drain covers not meeting code.
Pools will be drained Monday and repaired.

Sign up for Free “ Learn to Swim” lessons are scheduled 12:30pm – 2:30pm  today at Hannah Atkins for the week of July 7th – 18th and Seidler Field for July 28th – August 8th.

  1. "Both pools failed due to the drain covers not meeting code"

That implies that a decision was made to fill the pools before the drains were inspected. How about a little accountability? Who made that decision?

My guess is that the offending drains were of the kind that can entrap a swimmer by hair or suit and have been illegal in public pools in New Jersey since 2009. Why weren't they fixed before this? Perhaps Councilor Williams can investigate and report.

  2. Jackson is the last one out, so as tradition goes ... the blame rest on him.

  3. Hi, Bernice,

I also asked the Recreation Division to provide me with copies of ALL the required Health Inspection reports regarding Plainfield's pools for the years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013. Thus far, they have been unable to locate any pool records for the years prior to Veronica Taylor's arrival as Supt. in mid-April 2014. This is quite alarming--inspections and other maintenance records must be somewhere. I will be following up on this matter, as inspections are REQUIRED before opening any pools--the records from the past must be somewhere, including all past health inspections. My request has been forwarded to the Health Officer.

On the positive front, though, I received the following update from Roni Taylor a little while ago:

    "Good Morning Councilwoman Williams,

I am happy to advise you that Hannah Atkins Pool opened for service yesterday, Tuesday, July 1, 2014. DPW began draining the main pool at Rushmore this morning. The Kiddie Wading pool will remain safely open. We plan to open the main pool by July 15th pending completion of liner removal and concrete resurfacing."

Again, I will follow up on this.

    Best,

    Rebecca

  4. Perhaps we need to ask why the previous administration did make sure the pools were up to code at the end of last season or did the money for this go to BLS?

  5. Why are the pools not inspected at the end of the season and a list of repairs to be made before the start of the next season? Doesn't the DPW know how to plan ahead? Does recreation need to have a group of good citizens to help get the pools ready for our kids ?

  6. The D P W had from last August or September to get the Pools inspected and ready in time for the Pools to open by Memorial Day. They should be ashamed of themselves not to have the pools open and ready to use for our children for the start of summer

    1. When was the last time you remember pools opening on time? It certainly did not happen in the past 8 years that I remember.

I think this is called cleaning up poo-poo.

  7. I believe it would be more helpful to be supportive and allow the new superintendent to assess the situation at recreation and spend her energy and thoughts on improvements going forward. The griping about the past serves no purpose other than provide those griping an opportunity to give an uniformed, not helpful to the future negative opinion.

  8. Information and a timeline for accountability... a new day has indeed dawned upon the recreation department..

  9. I'm thankful inspections have been made and our children (will) have a safe place for summer fun. I hope there are more spaces made for Plainfield's young people in the near future.

Thank you for dispersing the information, Bernice and Rebecca.

  10. Respectfully to 7:33 AM,

I think the new superintendent has done just what you suggest--working on improvements and actually doing the job which she was hired to do. However, it is equally important to ensure that the paperwork and records are accessible--the city (a corporation) has a LEGAL requirement to have all records of inspection available. It is mandated by the state. It is also a part of the fiduciary responsibility of the administration to make sure that this is done.

    Rebecca

  11. The drain covers have been an issue for several years already. Odd that the pools were allowed to open previously without the proper ones in place. Shows a lack of ethics or knowledge on an inspector and creates a huge liability for the City. Lets hope they are also checking the bonding and grounding as well. We dont need anyone getting zapped!
