Regarding the Third Ward Vacancy in December

Was Gloria Taylor appointed or elected to her seat?

Both, actually. In December the Democratic City Committee chose three candidates to fill the Third Ward seat soon to be vacated by Mayor-Elect Adrian O. Mapp. The names were presented to the City Council and Taylor was selected as appointee until the next general election.

In March, Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Green named a primary slate that included Taylor as the Third Ward candidate.

Candidates including Taylor met a March 31 filing date for the June 3 primary..

In June, Taylor beat Rasheed Abdul-Haqq and Charles McRae to win the Democratic Party line in the upcoming Nov. 4 general election. Her Republican opponent is Charles A. Jones Jr.

  1. She was appointed to the vacancy, and the primary election made her the Democratic nominee, so she is still an appointee. She would only be elected if she wins in November. Charles Jones dropped out. Her Republican opponent is now Randy Bullock. My opponent is Michelson.

  2. I can't see why this matters to anyone but Jerry (so why am I commenting?) but she has not been "elected to her seat" just yet. Elected, at least to me, means chosen in the general election. Ms Taylor has been nominated in the primary. If she were to loose the general would you still call her "elected"? No, but you could still call her "nominated". "Elected to be the nominee?". OK but normally, e.g. in non-Jerryese, you would simply say nominated.

  3. Hi Bernice,

Ms. Taylor is appointed until she takes office in January if she is elected in the November. Many people, Democrats included, may vote for the Republican candidate rather than continue with her in office. She is appointed until she takes office as an elected official. It only matters to Jerry Green as he protects one of his tools on the City Council.

  4. Ah yes--Jerry Green "named" the slate. The Democratic Committee had no voice in the process. That's leadership!

  5. I know I'm voting republican rather than voting for her. Her hatefulness is starting to show for real. What cinched that was her audacity to not vote for a waiver for the health officer we so desperately need. She worked out of town and she doesn't pay taxes here. What a hypocrite.

  6. She was not elected, she was anointed. She now has a proven track record and is not worth of election in November.

  7. It would be so so nice if everyone would vote for her Republican opponent, even though I don't think this guy would be any better, but I guess this is where the lest of two evils come into effect. Councilwoman Taylor should not have been elected to run for dog catcher. I keep hoping to be around when this council (minus 2) is led on that perp walk from City Hall down Watchung Avenue to the City JAIL.

  8. Bernice, The Democratic City Committee did not choose anyone. Jerry Green stood in front of the committee and announced who was being appointed.

The DCC never picks anyone, which includes electing the chair.
