Charter School Seeks to Build on Dunn Property

On Aug. 3, the Zoning Board of Adjustment will hear a proposal for a charter school on Central Avenue for 240 students, 30 staff members and two administrators.

The site, across from Cedarbrook School, is owned by Flora Dunn. Dan Damon described the property on a July 2013 blog post when it went on the market. The charter school, Barack Obama Green Charter High School, is currently located at 35 Watchung Ave.

The application to the Zoning Board seeks permission to combine two lots at the site and add two stories to the building. The notice states that schools are not a permitted use in the R-2 neighborhood. Variances are requested for five parking spaces in the front yard and 40 off-site parking spaces at the art school next door, as well as for signage and fences.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting is 7 p.m. on Aug. 3 in City Hall Library, 515 Watchung Ave. Documents regarding the application are on file in the Planning Division office on the second floor of City Hall. Anyone interested in the application will have an opportunity to present any objections they may have to the proposed application at the Aug. 3 hearing.

  1. OMG Why are they trying to destroy a historic neighborhood? I hope all the neighbors ban together against this proposal.

  4. What is DUNN trying to do? What Real Estate Agent is try to make a guck buck? I thought DUNN said he loved Plainfield, but it looks like he hates it. He is trying to destroy a whole beautiful historic neighborhood, and probably lowered the home value all around his house by 50% just by talking about a school. The Devils in DUNN hart for sure.... 5. I agree with Lalo with so many empty building in town there's no need for this school to move into this neighborhood...Historic or not.

    2. The Devil is in his soul for selling out Du Cret parking spaces. How could he even think about destroying a beautiful quiet neighborhood for $15,000. This neighborhood does not want a single family house turned into a High School for 240 kids and 40 teachers. Shame on you Gorden Fuller and Darlene Mc Williams for even thinking of this evil idea to destroy a beautiful neighborhood.

  7. Darlene is moving out, what does she care. Its just a commission. Shame on you for even thinking of it. Use the empty school on South Ave. Its ready to go. Tell Malcolm to lower the price and it will sell as a residence as it is intended for. Sitting for that long should tell you something. Priced too high.
