Run for County Committee

If you are a registered Democrat and you want to enter politics at the most grassroots level, you can run this year for a seat on the county committee. Plainfield has 34 voting districts within its four wards and each district has a male and female representative elected in the June primary. On the Monday after the primary, the committee members elect a party chairman, ward leaders and other officers. All the committee people and officers serve for two years. As a committee person, it is your job to help get out the vote in your district and to bring the concerns of your neighbors in the district to elected officials. Petitions should be available soon in the City Clerk’s office and must be returned by 4 p.m. April 11. Not a lot of signatures are required, but you should get several more in case any of the signers are challenged. They have to be registered voters in the district you wish to serve. Committee candidates can run under any slogan, but if you win, you will become a member of the Regular Democratic Organization of Union County. For example, people who ran as "New Democrats" and won are now officially RDOs. The Citizens’ Campaign, an organization that aims to increase civic involvement, has more information on becoming a committee person. Click here to learn more. --Bernice

  1. Thank you for running this, Bernice. We need more people involved in Plainfield politics. Plainfield did not get this way in 6 years. It got this way because of uninvolved people who were also ambivilant. Here's hoping that those qualities will soon be gone regarding Plainfield politics.

  2. Bernice this is terrific! There are a lot of folks who want to get involved, but don't really know how. I think it makes a lot of sense to identify needs of both the city and greater community so residents can serve.

I was at a meeting last night and a few people kept stating - "that is just Plainfield, that's how our residents are. It's not South Plainfield, North Plainfield, Scotch Plains or Piscataway, it's Plainfield." I would argue that we CAN advocate change... We CAN create opportunities. We CAN change negativity and making the same mistakes over and over again.

All it takes is the will of the people and the dedication of our leadership. Instead of arguing why it CAN'T happen, let's agree on how it CAN happen. Instead of saying we tried that back in the 80's, let's see if anything has changed so it CAN happen in this millenium.

Challenge yourself to see the positive in your adversaries arguments. Focus on that positive, and create a better situation for us all!

  3. Aren't Republican county committee seats up, too?

  4. Dwayne, you should run for mayor. I also am sick of people saying "that is just Plainfield, that's how our residents are". Baloney -

Some Plainfield residents are willing to settle for anything in the gutter. The rest of us are looking toward the stars!

  5. How does one find out who their Democratic City Committee Member is for their ward?

  6. Check this link:

The officers are not all correct and we do not have eight council members, but the committee members are correct. Sadly, Hugh Smith in 2-7 recently passed away.
Two slates ran in 2009, New Dems and RDO of UC. The winners are a mix of the two factions.
Sharp-eyed readers may see some familiar names here (such as PMUA officials).

  7. Thanks for pointing out the PMUA officials. One should take extra note that more than 15 people on the list are either employed by the PMUA or their spouse is employed by the PMUA. It's no wonder nothing substantive is done about the PMUA's excessive fees. Too many people who are politically connected to effect change.
