More Stuff on the April 19 School Board Election

Moving the school board elections from November to April will mean holding a second reorganization in less than six months, and eight months' loss of service for several members.

Winners of the Nov. 3, 2015 election were sworn in on Jan. 5 for three-year terms, but instead of serving through Dec. 31, 2018 they may find themselves displaced in the April 2018 election. Those who took office in January of 2014 and 2015 could also be affected, though two are running for new three-year terms on April 19.

The Jan. 5 reorganization also included election of officers, but the board will have to reorganize again in late April or early May. Board President Wilma Campbell and Vice President Frederick D. Moore Sr. are both running for re-election on April 19 and conceivably could be named to the same posts again if they win, but losing will mean being out of office and off the board.

"Kingmaker" John Campbell, Wilma's husband and the organizer of many successful past campaigns, was an appointee last year and also a winner in November, thus eligible to serve until the April 2018 election even if Wilma loses on April 19.

As noted in a post Tuesday, eight candidates are vying for three seats on April 19.

Because the polls are open only from 2 to 9 p.m., some voters may want the use the vote-by-mail option.
For those who are comfortable with apps, Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi has announced the "Union County Votes" app with features including countdown to election dates, ability to check whether you are registered, voter information in English and Spanish and information on becoming a poll worker or running for office. The app is available for both Apple and Android devices.

  1. What's with all the Campbell signs?

It seems when they run for office they have more signs then votes for them.

So many of these signs are on empty and abandoned houses. Is that legal? And then many people have said they have signs are their lawns that they didn't give permission for.

This isn't right. I hope they don't run the board in the same manner.

Why does Plainfield always suffer under the self serving interests of a few.

    1. If people would vote, self-serving people like the Campbells wouldn't run such a shady and dishonest BOE.

  2. Kingmaker me think not! The only reason why John Campbell won in November is because he was virtually running unopposed. The Campbells know they can’t win an election on their own. It’s a fact that when they ran the slate in 2014 they enlisted the help and support of Mapp, without his support they most likely would not have been successful. Now that they are out of favor with Mapp they go crawling back to Jerry Green for support. Last November Green had all his people out working the polls and campaigning for John Campbell, his school board slate and John Jr for 2nd ward council. Watch and see if the Campbells don’t get the same support this April.

I guess the love/hate relationship between the Hatfields (Cambpells) and McCoys (Green) is back in love mode. SMH.

  3. Not to mention that they are spending $100,000 to have a special election in April. What is especially galling is that there is a BOE budget shortfall, so we may be paying more money in our taxes to make up for what the State won't pay. And $100,000 will not go to the children.

  4. John, Jr. had more signs than votes when he ran recently for City Council. Let's vote for our kids and our pocket books and get rid of the Campbell syndicate. Let's vote for a transparent and honest BOE. lET'S TAKE OUT THE TRASH!!!
