The Ultimate "We Said, They Said"

The first round of comments has come in on my post about Monday's special meeting and there is not a lot of middle ground. Those who support Lt. Ken Reid, regardless of whatever he did, support him to the hilt. Those who believe the Police Division is advancing and improving under the direction of Police Director Carl Riley continue to have faith in the effort.

Observers of Plainfield's political scene may also detect the specter of an unfinished battle between Adrian Mapp and Sharon Robinson-Briggs. I was looking online for an image of two armies doing battle in the historic way, each side aligned with flags flying, but Google only showed me a bunch of apocalyptic game wars instead. Revenge nowadays can mean total destruction of a city or country, and the inhabitants become mere collateral damage or are forced to flee.

When is it time to fight the power and when is it time to see if we can all get along? Remember the riots or re-brand the city as a new kind of community? The answer, my friends, ... remains to be seen.

  1. Somehow, Sharon and her supporter, Taylor and Tolliver, think they are relevant in Plainfield. They are not. The people of this city are tired of their political games and two faced positions. I strongly believe the games Gloria and Tolliver are playing will hurt them in the end. It's a good thing the long winded, Taylor, has decided not to run again. She would get her feelings deeply hurt when she sees how reviled she is in her ward.

  2. I am soooooooo tired of Gloria Taylor bringing up "when my husband was Mayor", but I thought I would fall out of the chair when she said, "I don't want to be Mayor, I've already been Mayor." YOU WERE NOT MAYOR, YOUR HUSBAND WAS!!!!!

Your last paragraph says it all Bernice "remember the riots or re-brand the city as a new kind of community" and personally I am TIRED of EVERY time she get the mike, she will bring up the riots. Next year, 2017 it will be 50 years, yes 50 years and since the riots. I lived through them, in fact the man (Bobby Williams) who was shot by the police lived directly across from me, you wanna talk about chaos????? Where was Taylor living then? As long as you keep living in the past, you will never be able to see the future. We have become even more diverse since 1967, with the influx of Latinos. I look at Mrs. Taylor as a separatist, who will never be happy no matter what happens in Plainfield. Her "no" vote last night was the nail in her coffin, she couldn't be elected dog catcher again. Mrs. Tolliver? I'm not sure what her issue is. She abstains more than she votes yes or no. Last night she commented on how she could not support the resolution, then abstained!!!! If you can't support it, THEN VOTE NO!!! I'm not even gonna start on Sharon, with her bag of candy! We can buy our own candy, we are not children.

    1. Thank you, Ms. Slaughter-Cabbell! It's time to move forward and Gloria Taylor only represents a sad and long-gone (thankfully) past. I'm eager to be part of the new direction for our city, one we can all be proud of and that embraces our differences, instead of continued divisions based on race or politics.

I appreciate the work of the bloggers and those who comment. We'll get through this, I think.

  3. Bernice, I was under the impression that you wrote this piece to try to establish unity, but people are still writing hateful things, and spewing out malice towards one another because of difference of opinion. Taylor is a grown woman and can say whatever she wants, and quite frankly I admire her for her courage, fortitude, and most of all her not caring what people who don't look like her think.

  4. To 8:47am - Proud that she said "That's why we killed Lt. Gleason"? Before you respond, take the time to read the minutes. She cannot say whatever she wants, she is a leader (albeit terrible) of this city.

If you truly believe that, then I guess you also have admiration for Trump.

  5. At 8:47, I AM a woman who looks like her, and she is my councilwoman, so she should care about what we think!! What she should do is think before she opens her mouth.

  6. Terri, Oh please, where did you come from ? Plainfield was already a bad place with crooked politicians, and a failing school system, now here you come with all your negativity. When you talk at council meetings no one interrupts your 3 minutes, but as soon as you don't agree with someone here comes your rude outburst. How much were you paid to support paid sick leave? I can take Gloria because she does not care what people think, yes she is crazy as hell, but is bold with it.You are just loud and rude, therefore go sit down and keep your rude, unprofessional comments to yourself. You are a miserable person that needs to get a life.

  7. I am most astounded that someone said Gloria was a reverand. Is that true? Is she actually a Christian reverand and talking like this?

  8. Cindy Watts -or whatever your name truly is- Ms. Terri Slaughter-Cabbell has the right to say or write whatever she feels because she represents HERSELF and what she has stated is the truth.

However -Councilwoman Gloria Taylor represents the 3rd Ward of The City of Plainfield. In other words she is a Public Official and SHOULD watch what she says.

Now I have heard that Councilwoman Taylor has said she was not going to run again for the 3rd Ward, which means she will be giving up her seat. Very smart decision Councilwoman Taylor! Obviously -Ass Green will not support you and you would've been running off the line. It is better to bow out then to be kicked out.
