Election Antics Old-Style

A couple of weeks ago, something that happened in the city made me recall the phrase, "What a revoltin' development this is!"

I couldn't remember the name of the person who said it, so I searched and found it was William Bendix in the show, "The Life of Riley." It started out in the 1940s as a radio show and became a television series in the 1950s.

I looked up the show and happened to get an episode about a school election that Riley rigged to benefit his daughter.

It was pretty funny and eventually Bendix came out with that signature catch phrase. Take a look here if you have time. And feel free to use the phrase when appropriate in 2016.

  1. If police director Riley would release the community complaint file of Captain O'Brien this would open a lot of eyes. What a revoltin development that would be. Mr. X

  2. I don't understand what one has to do with the other. Personal information cannot be released by state and federal law. Only Riley's supporters don't seem to see this. With the Campbells that phrase will be repeated a lot.

  3. Mr X, this post is about the upcoming school board election on April 19th. I am amaze how You, Taylor, Robinson-Briggs, the Campbells et al , continue in your effort to create a smoke screen to divert the focus from the real issues at hand, our upcoming school board election on April 19. Plainfield is at a pivotal stage and if we stand any chance of real progress in our school system and our city, now is the time to make those changes. It would be extremely difficult to effect any real change in our school system and city with our current school board and certain members of our city council. Not too long ago people complained about Assemblymen Green and the number of years he’s been in office with no visible signs of improvements for Plainfield. The same disdain should be had for the current school board president Wilma Campbell.

Four terms (12 plus years) of Wilma Campbell controlling the school board with no real signs of progress should motivate you to vote for change. In all fairness I have to say, there has been some small improvements, such as in 2010 the high school being ranked 318 out of 339 schools statewide to 280 out of 328 in 2014. Improvement yes, but still in the bottom. One would think that with a budget that is twice the size of the city we should have seen much more progress than this. If the current Mayor can make the progress he has in 3 short year with a city council majority that is hell bent on sabotage, why are we settling for such minor improvements from our school board?

People need to be aware of who is asking for their vote and why. We have a budget that is twice the size of the city budget, the possibility of an substantial increase in our property taxes, schools that lack permanent teachers, basic supplies, and most likely a reduction in staff due to the budget shortfall. Not to mention a superintendent that is basically ineffective due to her close personal relationship with the Campbells.

While knocking on doors campaigning for the slate endorsed by the Mayor, Pile (4), Hurtt (6) Anderson (8), I hear time and time again how disappointed residents are with the current state of our school system. It’s really a shame how unaware people are with what goes on in the district; especially the politics which plays a paramount role in the school board elections. Residents are unaware how and why the election was changed from November to April , how that change is costing close to $115,000. The fact that Plainfield is inundated with Charter Schools, the how and why Plainfield is the only city in Union county with Charter Schools and the list goes on.

The role the school board plays in our community and every decision they make will have a direct effect on our children’s lives today and in the future. The decisions they make effect our property taxes, helps to determines the value of our real estate market and has a direct correlation on new development in our city. Since the Campbell’s own a real estate office, they more than anyone else should realize the impact a school system has on the real estate market. No one wants to invest in a town with a below average school system.

We desperately need change on April 19th let’s put the focus on what’s really happening and what’s going to move Plainfield forward .

    1. Actually, it was a coincidence that that particular episode was the one that came up on YouTube in my search. I try to provide election information impartially and leave it to the voters to take action as their conscience dictates.
