S. Second Street Redevelopment Discussion tonight

Checking the city website late Wednesday, I came across a notice for a "community meeting" at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Nov. 5) at Ruth Fellowship Ministries, 733 S. Second St. The topic is "The South Second Street Redevelopment."

Planning Director William Nierstedt recently mentioned the possibility of a major development on a South Second Street block between Grant and Plainfield avenues, formerly owned by entrepreneur Oliver Brown. As noted in a Plaintalker II post, it was once the proposed site of a new middle school, but plans changed and it remained vacant. The city currently owns the tract. As far as I know, no development applications have been announced for the site.

The church, whose pastor is Rev. Tracey Brown, is across the street from the property. Rev. Brown also holds the Citywide at-large seat on the City Council.

The meeting overlaps a Planning Board meeting that begins at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Library, 515 Watchung Ave.

  1. Why would she overlap the planning board meeting? If there is a planning board meeting, who will be at her meeting representing the planning board to give any information?? As a Councilwoman I think it is poor planning on her part.

    1. I think she is only providing the venue. I'm told it is coming out of the Economic Development office.

  2. Thank You Bernice for clarifying who's meeting it is. Rev. Brown was asked if her church could be a meeting place for the meeting. She did not plan it, she simply was nice enough to let them use the church since the property in question is across the street. Therefore before people accuse and attack they need to do their homework. Again no good deed goes unpunished. Lisa Webster

    1. I think the person who raised the issue would take exception to being lumped in with anyone's "people."

  7. I am not now nor have I EVER been anyone's person except my own!!!!! You do not know me but since Bernice dies she is right in that I take exception to being lumped in anyone's "people".

Will I apologize to Rev Brown? If I was wrong in assuming it was a meeting the Councilwoman called, absolutely! However, I only found out about the meeting through a Facebook post the day OF the meeting, not a flier as was stated in a previous post. Can someone clarify where the fliers were handed out? As for referring to Rev Brown as she, is that not the proper pronoun in referring to a female?
