Republicans and Democrats who want to run in the June primary must file petitions today by 4 p.m.
Two four-year City Council seats are up this year, the Citywide at-large and the Third Ward. The Democratic City Committee has endorsed Councilwoman Rebecca Williams for the at-large seat and Charles McRae for the Third Ward. Williams is currently holding the Second & Third Ward at-large seat.
Incumbent Citywide at-large Councilwoman Tracey Brown has announced her intention to run for re-election, with political newcomer Alma Blanco as her Third Ward running mate.
Incumbent Third Ward Councilwoman Gloria Taylor has not said whether she will seek another term.
Republicans, who in Plainfield are outnumbered by Democrats at a rate of 13 to 1, have not announced council candidates. This is the year for the Republican Party to reorganize, with male and female committee seats open in the city's 34 voting districts, but in 2014 the GOP was only able to fill 15 of the 68 seats.
The winners of the June 7 Republican and Democratic contests will appear on the November ballot, along with any independent candidates who file on June 7. GOP committee winners will reorganize on the Monday following the primary election, choosing a chairman and officers to serve for two years.
Meanwhile, incumbent Mayor Adrian O. Mapp has begun raising funds for re-election in 2017. As Dan would say, "word on the street" is that Brown and former Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs are also interested in mayoral runs in 2017. The Fourth Ward seat, now held by Councilwoman Bridget Rivers, is also up for re-election in 2017.
After 2017, the council seat cycle begins again: Ward 1 with Wards 2&3 at-large in 2018, Ward 2 with Wards 1&4 at-large in 2019, Ward 3 and Citywide at-large in 2020 and Ward 4 and Mayor in 2021.

Iziah Thompson, the young man you wrote about on Nov. 14, 2015, is also running for the Ward 3 nomination.

Bernice, I know for a fact Rev. Tracey Brown is not interested in running for mayor. Word on the street and in Rutherford's Blog Dan Damon is the "king of fabrication." You cannot believe anything that he writes or states. Word on the street is that the King of Fabrication is still cruising the forth ward.
ReplyDeleteEvery time Sharon's administration has been faulted for something that now has to be cleaned up, Sharon has been in the audience and has not even tried to defend herself. Why would that be? Perhaps even she knows she's indefensible. So why in the world would she want to consider coming back? She doesn't have the dignity to just go away. It might be because if she keeps feeding minions, they will support her.
