Get Ready To Vote

By now, all registered voters should have received their sample ballots. A week from now, we shall know the results.

Only Democrats and Republicans can vote in the primary. In Plainfield, Democrats outnumber Republicans 13,071 to 836.Click here and scroll down to page 14 to see a ward and district breakdown of registered voters.

No Republicans filed to run for City Council, so the only races are between Councilwoman Tracey Brown and Councilwoman Rebecca Williams for the Citywide at-large seat and between Alma Blanco and Charles McRae for the Third Ward seat. Williams and McRae are on the Democratic Party line and Brown and Blanco are running off the line. Independent council candidates may file on June 7 to be on the November ballot along with the primary winners.

This is the year for Republicans to elect their committee members, but only eight people filed on April 4 for a possible 68 seats.

The ballot lists three Republican candidates for president, John R. Kasich, Donald J. Trump and Ted Cruz, even though Trump is now the presumptive nominee.Democrats can choose between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Overall, the presidential choices for voters in 2016 have been dubbed the worst in many years, for many reasons. We'll see on June 7 how many Plainfielders decided to vote anyway.

  1. Excellent reminder Bernice and thank you (as you always do) for encouraging residents to VOTE! I believe for continued progress in Plainfield, voters should select Rebecca Williams and Charles McRae for City Council. Despite the ups and downs of the Presidential Election, our local races are equally, if not more important, since the primary winners will help set the pace for which direction we take Plainfield in the future. Next Tuesday provides us not only a voice in who will lead our nation, but who will provide the leadership we desperately need here right at home in Plainfield. I know both Rebecca and Charles are committed to a pro-growth agenda for the City that includes positive solutions and fresh ideas to some of our pressing challenges and unique opportunities. I am proud to support their election and I encourage many others to do the same. Together we can continue to transform Plainfield into a thriving community that values diversity, inclusion and prosperity for all of its citizens.

  2. Bernice, I'm an Independent and received a sample ballot. Are you saying I won't be allowed to vote?

    1. If it is your first primary, you can declare a party affiliation at the polls. Otherwise, you should have done it 55 days prior to the primary.

    2. An unaffiliated voter in NJ who was registered before the May 17th deadline can declare a party affiliation at the polls on primary day and then vote.

  4. It would really be unfortunately for the progress of this city if Brown was re-elected. Brown is a wonderful minister but if we are honest we can all agree, she is not a good councilwomen. Brown has missed over 40% of council meetings and on any major issues she is either a no show or abstains. I think her religious beliefs causes her some inner-turmoil when put in the position to make decision on important issues effecting they entire city. I feel the best way for her to serve the community is through her church ministry.

As for Blanco, who is she? I’ve never seen or heard from her in the 3rd ward. From what I understand she wasn’t even a register voter in the 3rd ward or Plainfield last year. I thought she lived in North Plainfield until recently.
